2014 World Cup Betting – Group E Preview
Group E of 2014 World Cup betting should be a fascinating one, because it is a little hard to pick out just exactly who will be going through to the knockout stage from it. France are trading at 10/11 favourites, but the revived Switzerland team could push them hard. The dark horse in the group is definitely Ecuador, and they could just have the pace and enterprise to catch either of the European nations in Group E coldm if they let their guard down.
Switzerland face up to Ecuador while France take on Honduras in the first round of group matches. Then the two Europeans go head to head in their second matches and that is expected to be the defining clash in the group as far as top spot goes. Switzerland won their qualification group at a canter, finishing with a healthy +11 goal difference and going unbeaten across their ten matches (W7 D3). Granted, they were drawn in one of the easier qualification groups, but they put in some pretty professional performances.
France had to go through the play off route in order to make it to Brazil 2014, after finishing second in their qualification group to Spain. They had to produce a rousing finish in their play off encounter with the Ukraine as well, after losing the first leg 2-0 but then a stirring performance back in Paris saw them take a 3-0 win to get through in the most dramatic of fashions. Les Bleus crashed miserably, crashing out in the first stage in a group with Mexico, Uruguay and South Africa without posting a win. So they have a lot make amends for.
The trouble for France, is that a good tournament is in them, but they always seem to missing a key piece of the puzzle. Lack of goals may hurt them in the competition this time around again. France lead the head to head with Switzerland narrowly by 15-12. Is there another World Cup disappointment on the cards from the French, because Switzerland are definitely on the up and there could be some great value in backing the Swiss to top the group at 11/4.
Ecuador finished fourth in the CONMEBOL qualification zone, a little lighter up front up than the other qualifying nations, but producing some tight displays at the back. Going up against any South American team in Brazil isn’t going to be easy for any European nation, and Ecuador could cause some surprises. They kept five clean sheets in their eight home games during qualification, and while they were weaker on the road, it may point to them being a bit of a stubborn side to break down, especially with Switzerland and France not being the most prolific of sides.
Making up the numbers here are Honduras who are trading at 1/3 to finish bottom of the group. They don’t look to be in any great kind of shape to make a run at qualification here and are as far out as 4/1 to qualify from the group. But there should be a pretty tight race between the other three, with Ecuador Even money to qualify against Switzerland at 1/2 and France at 1/5. None of these are going to go on and win the 2014 World Cup, but still, it looks to be a pretty interesting group.
