They have done it twice before in the history of the World Cup, have Argentina. They have gone all the way to the title before, in 1978 and 1986, and it is beginning to feel like a very long gap since we have seen them on top of the world. They have a fifty percent strike record in World Cup finals, as they have been to four, the last time getting close to a title defence in 1990 when they lost 1-0 against West Germany in Rome. But the Argentines have always been tough competitors to go up against, but it is fair to say that they have been underachieving for a while now, even with one of the game’s superstars, Lionel Messi, in their ranks.

Will things be different this time around? Will they actually be able to fulfil the inherent potential which they clearly have in the squad? Argentina odds to win World Cup 2014 have them priced up at 5/1 which puts them as joint-second favourite alongside Germany. Four years ago in South Africa they looked as if they might be ready to deliver, but they had Diego Maradona as head coach and no-one could figure out what he was doing from a tactical perspective. Not even the players looked like they knew what they were doing, even Lionel Messi was playing far too deep. Argentina went on to get brushed aside 4-0 by Germany in the quarter finals.

So it wasn’t mission accomplished from them and Maradona’s side never really looked settled, despite the array of talent that they could call upon. But now they have the more pragmatic and certainly more tactically astute presence of Alejandro Sabella in charge. He is relatively new on the international managerial scene, this being his first job after taking over in 2011 when Argentina suffered an early exit from the Copa America, but he has done a pretty solid job. They look a hard working outfit with a very strong balance.

Of course Lionel Messi will be grabbing most of the attention in previews and the Barcelona star is overwhelming 8/1 favourite in the Top Goalscorer market in 2014 World Cup betting. But they have one of the most enviable attacking line ups of all squads heading to Brazil 2014 as they can call upon Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain if need be, with Aguero at 16/1 and Higuain at 20/1 to win the Golden Boot this summer.

But Argentina are not all about their forward line. They have a fantastic midfield with the likes of Angel di Maria, Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez in there. There is strength at the back from Pablo Zabaleta, Federico Fernández and Marco Rojo. The thing about Argentina is that they will have the legs to, because they have a lot of players in their prime who are yet to hit the age of thirty, so a relatively young squad, but experienced. They have the look of being one of the most well-balanced sides heading to the World Cup.

You cannot ignore the challenge and potential threat posed in Argentina to win World Cup 2014 odds, not when they are priced so short. It still looks a valuable bet because they are such as strong side and after coming through the tough CONMEBOL qualification zone, they should be ready for anything which gets thrown at them in Brazil, where they will be suited to the playing conditions as well in their neighbouring country.

Every World Cup hosted in South America has been won by a nation from the hosting continent. Argentina could well keep that trend going and are fantastically priced at Even money to reach the semi finals. Occupying Group F alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria, La Albiceleste have a great opportunity to build up a head of steam.
