Argentina light the touchpaper on their 2010 FIFA World Cup adventure in Johannesburg on June 12th against the African Eagles, Nigeria, in Group B, where later on games with South Korea and Greece await Maradona’s charges. However, before then, the man many claim the ‘greatest ever footballer’ will have one final chance to assess the 23 players he selected in his preliminary squad ahead of the finals next month, as a friendly encounter with Canada was pencilled in for Monday the 24th May.

Quite what the Argentina FA were thinking when they pencilled in a friendly with a Canada team ranked 63 in the world is anyone’s guess, as the North Americans will be considered lightweight in comparison to the fierce opposition Argentina will face in South Africa throughout June and possibly July. This is a Canada team which didn’t even make the final stage of World Cup qualifying, so the Argentine back four and goalkeeper may have a quiet day you feel.

There has been plenty of talk, mainly criticism, about the lack of stability within the Argentina ranks – Diego Maradona’s persistence to change personnel amongst other factors – but an area where Argentina are overwhelming strong is up front, with no less than four world-class strikers vying for a fixture in Maradona’s starting eleven. The plus point for Carlos Tevez, Diego Milito, Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi is Maradona prefers the attacking 4-3-3 formation. The problem for all bar the exceptional Messi is only two are realistically up for grabs, with Messi the star in camp and a certainty to start every game in South Africa barring any injuries. This game with Canada though provides those desperate to make Maradona’s forward equation with the opportunity to shine, so scoring a few goals against a mediocre Canada may go some way to winning the Argentine great over.

For Diego Milito however, the Canada game, Argentina’s one and only pre-World Cup friendly, will come too soon after his Champions League exploits on Saturday, scoring the only two goals of the final as Inter Milan clinched their first Champions League title. The Inter forward was sublime on the night though, with his hard-working and clinical display earning him the Man of the Match award and probably the admiration of his international coach. Those Argentine forwards who weren’t involved on Saturday, notably Tevez and Higuain, will have noted how well Milito performed and how his efforts may have caught the eye of Maradona. The pressure is now on the pair of them to deliver tomorrow, but with both desperate to impress with a goal or two, could disharmony set in if either concentrates solely on their own game? After all, if there’s an opportunity to shoot tomorrow, there’s no doubt both will look to seize the chance in a bid to impress a very judgemental coach.

Our Prediction: Argentina to cruise to victory @ 1.17 Totesport

Anything less than a comfortable win tomorrow and eyebrows will raise. We’re expecting a good four or five, while a clean sheet goes without saying for AZ Alkmaar keeper Sergio Romero. The pre-match build up will be about Argentina’s strikers, with both Tevez and Higuain eager to impress against the Canadians, and a large portion of the game will circle around them as this is a game Argentina are fancied to dominate from the off, forming attack after attack.

Diego Maradona frustrated many back home with his constant tinkering with players – using over 100 individuals during qualifying – and he’ll be disappointed with the fairly recent rule that managers are permitted to use just six substitutes in friendlies. Mark my word, Maradona will make use of every single one.

Our Recommendation: Gonzalo Higuain First Goalscorer – 3.25 Boylesports
