Argentina v Iran Betting Preview – World Cup 2014
Group F resumes with a lopsided looking battle. This should be another three points in the bag for the Albiceleste, which will see them go marching on towards the knockout stage. Iran earned themselves a point against Nigeria in their opening match. It’s unlikely that they will get any change out of Argentina, as they go into this one as outrageously heavy underdogs.
This is the first World Cup meeting between the two sides, but they have played once before when they met in a friendly back in 1977. That game ended in a 1-1 draw. Argentina opened their World Cup account with a 2-1 win over Bosnia and they had to labour a bit, but a special goal from Lionel Messi saw them through. It was just little passes not coming off for Argentina, which suggested that if they click, they are going to be a major force.
Argentina have won ten and lost just one of their last 13 World Cup games, and in that run they have scored 26 and conceded just five. They have now won five of their last six matches at the World Cup too, the loss there being that 4-0 defeat by Germany four years ago. Lionel Messi’s goal against Bosnia was just the second World Cup goal of his career, and he is 1/2 to get on the scoresheet against Iran, with Sergio Aguero at 4/7 and Gonzalo Higuain at 4/6. However, Argentina have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last three World Cup matches.
Iran have played ten World Cup matches and have won one, which was against the USA back in 1998. They have lost six of those ten. Their only previous World Cup experience against a South American side was against Peru back in 1978, a game which Iran lost heavily. They were the side who qualified for the World Cup with conceding the least amount of goals, and their defence earned them a good point against Nigeria. That is four draws in their last six matches played (W2 D4). But they lack badly going forward and they shouldn’t get much of a look in here. Still worth shooting over 2.5 goals for this one, as Argentina should win this comfortably.
