Argentina V Peru

Saturday 10th October – 23:00 GMT

Argentina - The ‘Argies’ are supposedly in trouble, which you could say is true to some extent, but Diego Maradona’s side still have two games left to put right what has been an less-than-impressive qualifying campaign, with their next qualifier against Peru a gift-wrapped opportunity for Argentina to register not only their first win in three games but also their first points since their 2-0 defeat in Ecuador, three qualifiers ago.

Back home this is being touted as a must win game for Argentina and that pretty much goes without saying considering the opposition. On paper Argentina should knock Peru for six, but Argentina haven’t been playing like they should on paper, so we suppose anything could happen. However, Argentina should have more than enough to see off a poor Peru on home turf, with a much harder trip to Uruguay several days later the more cause for concern.

Peru – One of just two nations in the South American qualifying group that cannot make the finals, mathematically. The Peruvians are rock-bottom of the table and with the incentive not there for Peru, will their hearts really be in this contest. They are certainly a team to avoid at this moment in time, although the highlight for them will be the chance to see Nolberto Solano in action for perhaps one of the last times in his career.

No one in Argentina can or are contemplating anything other than a home win, a comfortable one at that. They could certainly do without any scares in this home qualifier as they may well get their far few when the travel to Uruguay four days later. However, by then they could already be out of the hunt if they don’t wrap up the three points here so it’s a do or die situation for the players over the forthcoming week or so.

Peru are the perfect opponents for an Argentina side that is severely lacking in form and confidence. It’s been four games since Argentina last won a qualifier, four games since Argentina last picked up some points, so the apparent low morale within the camp is no surprise. However, they are facing a Peru side with nothing at all to play for, no incentives and no home support, probably a scarce few will actually travel to Argentina to cheer on their country, so it all swings in the direction of a home win, hopefully a formality.

Statistics:

Argentina Home Record: 5-2-1

Goal Tally: 20-19

Peru Away Record: 0-0-8

Goal Tally: 9-32

Our Thoughts – Quite simply a home win. Peru have nothing going for them to make us think otherwise, if they did then a lay of Argentine may not have been a bad bet considering their disastrous form of late. However, Maradona is blessed with an array of talent, a wide selection of which he obviously isn’t get the utmost out of. They underachievers and performers will need to buck their ideas up but this is the perfect match up for them to get back to winning ways and keep their World Cup dreams firmly on track, for the time being anyway.
