World Cup 2018 Betting Predictions

Northern Ireland head out on the road on the weekend for a tricky game against Azerbaijan. Northern Ireland put a big 4-0 home win on the board against them earlier in the qualification campaign, but things are likely going to be a lot tighter in this reverse fixture. Azerbaijan could actually pull level on points with the Irish if they take a home win in this one and that would blow the race for second place behind runaway leaders Germany, wide open. This may be a case of Northern Ireland just ensuring that they get out of this game with a point in the bag.

Azerbaijan vs Northern Ireland Betting Tips

Big game for Northern Ireland because the order of the day is just going to be avoiding defeat. A point wouldn’t be bad out of this one for them in what could be a tricky away game. They are well on the road to Russia 2018 after having put in some great work in qualification and they won’t want to lose sight of that. Northern Ireland have put up a W3 D1 L1 record on the group so far, with their only defeat coming against runaway leaders Germany. That was on the road and their other away game in the group saw them take a great point against the Czech Republic. Sometimes it is just about digging in out on the road. The Irish have only conceded the two goals in their five games so far and under 2.5 goals at Sky Bet is trading at a price of 4/9.

There have been the five previous meetings between these two and Northern Ireland hold a W2 D2 L1 advantage from that. They have been to Azerbaijan twice before and so far have failed to net a single goal there having taken a 0-0 draw on their first visit and suffering a 2-0 loss the last time that they were there. So again, look for a low scoring game and in the Sky Bet correct score market a 0-0 draw is an 11/2 quote while for a 1-0 in Northern Ireland’s favour returns a 5/1 price. In the anytime goalscorer market, Kyle Lafferty is up at 15/8, with Liam Boyce at 11/4 and Josh Magennis at 5/2. Lafferty is the joint-second top scorer in the group with three goals.

Azerbaijan would pull themselves into qualification contention if they were to land a win in this home game. A victory would put them level on points with the Irish so there is some big incentive for them in this one. They have gone W1 L1 at home, like the Irish having suffered a reversal against Germany, but they posted a narrow 1-0 win over Norway. There have been just the three goals from them in qualification so far, so they are not a major threat going forward. Azerbaijan have posted a W3 D1 L2 record in their last six matches played but there has been just the one win in their last four played, which was a victory over Qatar in an international friendly.

Azerbaijan remarkably managed to score against Germany in their last qualifier and both teams to score at Sky Bet is an 11/10 punt. It may just be worth settling for the draw which would favour the Irish more.
