Belgium v Russia Betting Preview – World Cup 2014

Here it is then, the big clash in Group H between Belgium and Russia. This was pretty much what the group was going to come down to, but there could be a bit of a twist, because Russia will be under some pressure if they lose this one after only managing a draw against South Korea in their opener. Will they respond or will the Red Devils deliver on their supremacy here? It could be crunch time in the group.

In three matches against Russia (not counting Soviet Union matches), Belgium are unbeaten winning two and drawing one. So they have that on their side. They have squared off against Russia before at the World Cup, meeting in the group stages of the 2002 World Cup. Belgium took a 3-2 win in that one, and it was current coach Marc Wilmots who netted the winner in it. Belgium opened their World Cup 2014 account with a 2-1 win over Algeria, without really getting close to top gear, looking a bit laboured.

Romelu Lukaku is top option in the Anytime Goalscorer market at a price of Even Money. He was on the scoresheet twice when the two nations last met, which was in a friendly back in November 2010. However, he didn’t impress in Belgium’s first match against Algeria, not getting a single touch in the opposition penalty box in his 60 minutes of action. Belgium were good at keeping their foot on the ball, and keeper Thibaut Courtois has yet to lose a match with the national side in his eighteen appearances between the sticks for them.

The Russians had to come from behind in their opener against South Korea, an equaliser being netted by Aleksandr Kerzhakov. He is up as a 2/1 shot in the anytime goalscorer market against Belgium, with Aleksandr Kokorin at 3/1. Kerzhakov is now joint-top scorer for Russia having netted 26 goals in his career. They look Russia’s best routes to goal. Fabio Capello’s Russia looks a bit lacklustre, not looking very adventurous or keen to really stamp their authority over opposition. It looks as if they just want to get things done with the least amount of effort possible. They aren’t an exciting side and that is reflected in the odds here.

Belgium v Russia Betting Tips

There is enough value in the match outright to bank on the Belgians here at 10/11

Would expect the goals to be at a premium in this one and would go under 2.5 goals
