Brazil v Chile Betting Preview – World Cup 2014

Chile may end up rueing their missed chance to win Group B after having fallen to a 2-0 defeat against Holland in their final match. Brazil topped Group A with two wins and a draw and go as favourites in this all-South American second round clash, a repeat of a meet up at this stage four years ago.

The stats do lean towards Brazil on this one, having won all three of the previous World Cup meetings between the two nations. They took a 3-0 win over Chile four years ago in the second stage of South Africa 2010. Brazil have a strong recent history against Chile, having scored two or more goals in each of their last nine matches against them for a total of 32 goals at an average of 3.6 per game. They of course have Neymar going well and he is even money favourite in the anytime goalscorer market. He is on fire and continues to carry the team offensively, having scored four goals in three matches for the host nation.

Neymar has scored eight goals in his last six matches for Brazil now. Their long current unbeaten run of form continued, now twelve matches unbeaten since their last defeat which was against Switzerland back in August of 2013. That is eleven wins in those twelve matches too, their only blight was their 0-0 draw against Mexico. Brazil have won their last five second round matches at the World Cup, scoring 13 and keeping four clean sheets in them. They have only lost just the one of their 10 World Cup encounters with fellow South American nations (winning 8). They are also unbeaten in their last 40 matches on home soil.

Chile have shipped 11 goals in their three meetings with Brazil at the World Cup, conceding an average of 3.7 goals per game. It doesn’t make pretty reading. They have lost nine of the last ten matches (in all competitions) against Brazil as well, drawing one. Still, Eduardo Vargas has netted on both of his last two previous games against Brazil and he is a 3/1 shot in the anytime goalscorer market. Four of Chile’s five goals scored at the World Cup so far have come in the first half of matches. Just twice before have Chile made it to this stage of the competition, both occasions running into Brazil and losing. The ready gets a bit worse for Chile as they have played fellow South American sides four times in total (Brazil three times) in World Cup matches and they have lost all of them. They have never managed to post a win against Brazil on Brazilian soil either, losing twenty and drawing six.
