Cameroon v Croatia Betting Preview – World Cup 2014

This is a battle for survival in Group A after both sides lost their opening group matches. A second loss could be costly and with the big points up for grabs in this one, it is Croatia who are being backed as favourites to take the crucial win. Can they keep themselves in the hunt for a place in the knockouts in what will be the first match ever between the two nations? That means it is harder to call, as there is no history and Croatia have never faced an African nation at the World Cup.

The Croatians get the big boost of having star striker Mario Mandzukic back in the fold, and he will bring a much need aerial threat, which could be the key to this one. Croatia put on a decent show against Brazil in their opening match, but went down 3-1 and the goal that they did get was an own goal. So Mandzukic will bring quality to their front line and he is immediately trading as even money favourite in the anytime goalscorer market for this match.

Croatia though need to snap some poor World Cup form as they haven’t won any of their last five games at the finals (L3 D2). Their last win at the World Cup was against Italy back in 2002. Still, punters were trusting them enough ahead of the start of the tournament here, as they were running as second favourites to qualify behind Brazil. On a positive note, they have lost just the one of their last six played and that was against Brazil. On a negative, they aren’t a high scoring side, so really need Mandzukic in the game.

It is likely that this will be a low scoring affair, so go under 2.5 goals. Croatia aren’t all that bad at the back, and Cameroon aren’t a big offensive threat. The Indomitable Lions only managed one shot on target in their opening match against Mexico, and Mexico’s defence isn’t great. Cameroon have won just one of their last 14 World Cup matches (against Saudi Arabia back in 2002) and they have only won one of their 13 matches at the World Cup against European opponents as well. The stats certainly aren’t on their side in this one, as they have also lost their last five World Cup matches on the bounce, and scored just seven in their last 12.
