Costa Rica v Greece Betting Preview – World Cup 2014

Not many would have predicted that these two would be squaring off in the second round of the World Cup. Two big underdogs get to go against each other here and there don’t look to be too much to split them. It could come down to simply who can dig deep enough to grind out a win.

Costa Rica were expected to finish bottom of Group D, but they turned everything on its head by winning it ahead of Uruguay. They beat the Uruguayans in their opener and then followed that up with a victory over Italy, before rounding off with a draw against England. There is no prior history between Costa Rica and Greece, this being the first time that they will have squared off. Only once prior to this had Costa Rica made it out of the group stage. That was back in 1990 when they lost 4-1 against Czechoslovakia. But they are edging favouritism here against Greece, who are making their first appearance at this stage.

Costa Rica only won one of five matches in 2014 before they went to Brazil. So it is a massive shock that they are where they are, having come through the group of death. Most surprisingly of all is that they have been defensively sound, only conceding the one goal so far and that having come from the penalty spot against Uruguay. They have conceded possession heavily in each of their games so far, but could come close to dominating it against the Greeks. They have scored four goals so far and all of them have come after the 44th minute of the match. Not unreasonable therefore to expect the second half to be the highest scoring of the game, which can be backed at 4/5.

There’s probably not going to be a lot of goals, so go under 2.5 goals. A last minute, stoppage time penalty by Greece over the Ivory Coast sent the Europeans through to the knockout stage for the first time ever. Greece have only ever won seven matches at major tournaments, and all seven of those victories have come via a single goal margin. Not a bad shot them to look at Greece to win by 1 goal at 7/2. Greece have only won two of nine World Cup matches played, and they are the only games they have scored in too, being a 2-1 victory over Nigeria and the recent one against the Ivory Coast. All four of their World Cup goals have all come after the 42nd minute of matches.  Greece have managed just the one clean sheet in their nine previous World Cup matches but will Cosat Rica be able to trouble them enough?
