Daniel Sturridge favourite at Bet365 to be England’s top goalscorer at Brazil 2014
Can England’s Wayne Rooney live up to expectations finally at the World Cup? He has disappointed hugely, being England’s great forward hope, in the last two World Cup tournament, and the betting for Brazil 2014 may be suggesting that he is going to let a lot of supporters down again. After failing to score in any of his previous World Cup appearances, online betting site Bet365 have trimmed odds on Rooney from 5/2 to 7/4 to not score at all during Brazil 2014.
It is an understandable move on the back of his performance against Peru, in which he was pretty much anonymous on the fringes of the game during his time on the pitch. In his defence, this was his first game back after missing the end of the Premier League season with a groin strain, and he had been working hard in a special training program out in Portugal before joining the England squad. So it was always likely that he wasn’t going to be 100% match sharp.
With that said, it looks as if the Manchester United man could be outshone by Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge at Brazil, who continues to be bang in form, netting an exquisite opening goal for England in their 3-0 warm up win over Peru. There is a dilemma for Roy Hodgson in that Rooney and Sturridge don’t look a cohesive pair in playing together.
Most bookmakers in World Cup 2014 betting are still holding out on Rooney being 11/4 favourite to be England’s top scorer at Brazil 2014, however, online betting site Bet365 have put Sturridge as 9/4 favourite to top score for his country, with Rooney at 11/4 and Steven Gerrard at 11/1. A price of 33/1 can be taken on no England player managing to find the back of the net at the tournament.
Bet365 have also priced up at 11/2 that Rooney, England’s leading scorer in qualifying with seven goals, bags three or more at the World Cup. Sturridge, who outscored Rooney 22-17 in the Premier League last season, is 66-1 to be the top tournament goalscorer while Rooney is 50-1.
