As the Ivory Coast get all excited about South Africa 2010 in just their second World Cup finals, Didier Drogba will look to be the man to spearhead Les Elephants South Africa bid as captain. At 32 years-old, Drogba now fits the captains bill perfectly, bolstering more big time experience and winners medals than any other player in the Ivory Coast team.

One of the best forwards in the modern era, Didier Drogba comes in the shape of an absolute giant, standing in at 6ft 2inc tall and built like a powerhouse. The Ivorian forward is remarkably strong; allowing him to hold up play without much of a fuss, surprisingly quick on his toes for such a big bloke, often seen rampaging past defenders with his useful pace and turn of foot, and one of the best finishers of the ball on the planet. His predatory instincts around the goal is amply combined by some cool yet authoritative finishing makes him one of the more intimidating strikers a defender will ever have the displeasure of facing.

There’s no doubting Drogba is one of the best strikers around, even at 32 years-old – his phenomenal scoring record for club and country is evidence of this, but there are negatives to an otherwise incredible forward. The first thing, and it’s one our pet hates, is his persistent diving. It’s been an ever present feature in Drogba’s game play, going down too easily despite having the strength to repel even the boldest of challenges. To his credit he has improved that aspect of his game, although the dives do comes out of the closest when matters on the field aren’t going his teams way. The second is his childish attitude, often sulking when he doesn’t get his own way. Drogba is very competitive, some would say too competitive, if there is such a thing, and the unsporting like monster within him has come out to play on too many occasions.

We would argue that Drogba is a tad too selfish, often looking to claim all the limelight. However, you could easily counter that with a thirst for victory, as Drogba puts his absolute all into their cause and never likes losing. As captain, however, he will need to lead by example; inspiring his team mates with his own magic as well as lifting the troops when times are bad. It’s the latter we’re unsure of, and it’s one of the reasons why Ivory Coast faltered in the African Cup of Nations earlier in the year despite being the favourites to win the competition, and one factor why Les Elephants could come a cropper in South Africa. By the some token, Drogba is a menace up front, one of the very best at what he does and that’s scoring goals. He could quite easily be the star man in the Ivory Coast ranks, the inspirational leader coach Sven Goran Eriksson needs and the idol the fans back home adore.
