Ecuador V Uruguay

Saturday 10th October – 23:00 GMT

Ecuador The Ecuadorian have worked their socks off in qualifying and they are in command of the fourth and probable final qualifying position up for grabs. However, they do only have a one point cushion to play with and they will need to win this game at home to Uruguay else they will leave the door wide open for others to dethrone them of fourth position. They also face a tough trip to Chile after this so they can ill afford anything other than a victory at home to Uruguay on Sunday.

Uruguay – The likes of Diego Forlan & Luis Suarez have no option but to beat Ecuador on their own patch if they are keep their world cup dream alive. Although they only find themselves two points adrift of Ecuador in sixth, the fact that their next and final qualifier is against Argentina, a team still battling for a spot in the finals, means Uruguay need to win to stay in touch else they could find themselves fighting it out in a play-ff, that's if they finish in fifth.

This is an intriguing fixture as neither side can afford to drop any points. A win for Ecuador would help them consolidate fourth position while defeat would leave them extremely vulnerable, A victory for the travellers, Uruguay, would keep their qualifying bid alive, setting up a crunch encounter with Argentina in the final fixture, while defeat for them would spell the end in terms of sneaking a top four finish.

There is so much at stake for both countries, although, Ecuador do have a little more room for manoeuvre. However, this should be a cut-throat match with both sets of players pouring their heart and soul onto the pitch as they give it one final hoorah before the final set of qualifiers.

We have yet to see the Ecuador squad on paper but the Uruguay squad hasn't thrown up too many surprises, although, Diego Forlan (6 goals in qualifying) & Luis Suarez ( 4 goals in qualifying) have both been selected and the pair will be pivotal in Uruguay's chances.

Statistics:

Ecuador Home Record: 4-3-1

Goal Tally: 21-23

Uruguay Away Record: 1-3-4

Goal Tally: 26-18

Our Thoughts – Very tough game to call, like many others, but Ecuador actually get our vote of confidence here. They have been a formidable side on home soil, losing just one of eight home qualifiers thus far. They work extremely hard whenever they have the fans rallying behind them and we expect another workmanlike performance from them. However, they are a nation who can roll side over, so we expect a narrow home victory, if not then a draw. It's hard to envisage Uruguay recording the win they so desperately need.
