England manager Gareth Southgate announced his World Cup 2018 squad on Wednesday and it is a squad which has a pretty positive look about it. Instead of going just for big names who have failed to produce in the past, Southgate is putting his trust in players who have produced strong form across the season.

With a young squad selected having just an average age of around 26 years, Southgate has taken bold options like Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ruben Loftus-Cheek who had a great season on loan at Crystal Palace from Chelsea. Southgate left out goalkeeper Joe Hart and the injury-prone Jack Wilshere of Arsenal.

While there though does look to be plenty of energy in the squad along with plenty of pace with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling and Jesse Lingard, perhaps the one big question is where the creativity in the middle of the park is going to come from with Southgate having overlooked the likes of Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey.
