World Cup fixtures will soon pit England against the unknown North African opposition of Algeria in Group C of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. As the nations heading towards the finals start thinking about their finals squads, Algeria boss Rabah Saadane is having a headache over who name as their starting keeper for the tournament. Will it be Lounes Gaouaoui or Faouzi Chaouchi? It is something of a tricky balance in making this decision, with Gaouaoui having the experience but aging years, or Chaouchi’s youthful over-exuberance. At the African Cup of Nations, Chaouchi displayed some ill discipline when it appeared that he was intent on head butting a referee. He got sent off later in the match for further ill discipline, but he will look at his performance in the play-off match to get to the World Cup, in which he performed heroics against Egypt to get his nation to the finals. Chaouchi would miss game at the World Cup if he goes, due to a suspension for his actions.

How much will these indiscretions put doubt upon his character to hold his nerve on the biggest stage of all? Chaouchi’s character is in contrast to Gaououi, who has proven time and again that he can stay calm under pressure, but there are doubts over the 32 year old’s agility and endurance in comparison to his younger understudy. Will betting on England at the World Cup be influenced by this at all, or will they even be facing either of them? There is the possibility that they both may miss out also. Algeria have named their preliminary World Cup squad and Chaouchi is in. Portsmouth defender Nadir Belhadj is also in the squad, and is another one who would miss matches at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, after being sent off in the same match as Chaouchi did at the African Cup of Nations semi final.

Algeria Coach Rabah Saadane will take his side to their training camp in Switzerland, and there are still spots open up for grabs in squad. In the World Cup odds, Algeria are the rank outsiders to get out of Group C, and their performances at the African Cup of Nations, which lacked a lot of punch in attack, are a fair indication of that. They will come up against England, Slovenia and the USA in the group, and some of the best betting odds on Algeria will probably come in looking at live in play betting with them. Part of Algeria’s preparations will include a friendly against the Republic of Ireland.
