England squad places still up for grabs: Neville and Campbell options?

Could there be some surprise veteran call ups as cover for England’s World Cup campaign? Both Manchester United’s Gary Neville and Arsenal’s Sol Campbell, have dreams of making a final swansong for their country. Are they viable options for boss Fabio Capello to consider though, as it will be banking on experience over things like fitness, speed and durability. Neville put in a great display for his club in their Champions League victory over AC Milan, while Campbell has slotted in seamlessly at the back for Arsenal, as the Gunners look to steal the Premier League crown from under Manchester United and Chelsea’s noses. With injuries to Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Cole, the England defence does not have a lot of experience in depth, so could the veterans step in to the fold and occupy a squad place in Capello’s 22-man squad? Man Utd’s Rio Ferdinand has changed his training regime in order to try and heal and protect his back, which is keeping him out of domestic duty.

Other fringe players hoping for a good run into their domestic seasons, include Manchester City’s exciting winger Adam Johnson, who will be looking to continue to impress during the final run in of the league. Johnson was called up for the provision squad for England’s recent friendly against Egypt, but did not play any part. Arsenal’s Theo Walcott, after failing to make any impression in that friendly, came off the bench on Saturday to inject some pace into Arsenal’s attack, as they overcame 10-man Hull in the Premier League. Walcott, who has impressed in an England shirt, has suffered from a long injury and is desperately trying to make his way back to full fitness. Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing is also knocking on the door again, with a return from injury, and to form. With Spurs winger Aaron Lennon on the sidelines through injury, and Chelsea’s Joe Cole not getting any playing time at Stamford Bridge, the options are option for the wide men.

Fulham’s Bobby Zamora, who size, control and finishing this season has led to calls for him to get a chance in the full England side, has made a statement over his own chances, by booking a summer trip to Las Vegas. With Jermain Defoe looking short of that out and out international quality in England’s friendly, which will be needed to partner Wayne Rooney at the World Cup, there may be still some wiggle room to get into the squad as a striker. But with a long queue of potential suitors as Rooney’s partner, Zamora apparently knows the score. Thankfully for England fans, Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson has announced that he is going to try and rein in some of the over-enthusiastic play by his star striker, which puts him at risk from injury. Capello has been worried about Rooney being burned out by his club duty, and this will at least go some way to appease the England boss.
