England have confirmed that they will play Brazil in a friendly match later in the year, as part of Capello’s World Cup warm up plans for the team. Come November, England will meet the Brazilians again, the first meeting between the two nations since 2007 at Wembley, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The exhibition match will take place in Qatar, and while both teams have already qualified for South Africa 2010, it will be seen as a good test for both sides.

Brazil are joint favourites to lift the World Cup along with Spain, and England, thanks to a strong qualification campaign, have had their odds slashed to sit as third favourites. The two nations are both among the front runners, and that is exactly what Capello wants. Ahead of the World Cup he is keen to really judge the strength of his team against some of the best in the world. England have already completed friendlies against Germany, Holland and Spain already this year and, while it is generally hard to judge form and competitive edge from any friendly match, it should help both teams narrow down their squad selections ahead of the tournament.

England will complete their qualifying campaign in October, with games against Ukraine and Belarus, then it will be on to the Brazilians. In terms of international football, there is not much time between the end of qualifying and the beginning of the World Cup. There are likely only to be a handful of friendly matches next year ahead of the tournament, the most important ones will be done at altitude, in order to cope better physically in South Africa.
