England v Egypt – Capello not going anywhere

As England prepare for their big year ahead, starting with a friendly against Egypt (England v Egypt, March 3, 2010), Fabio Capello will be at the helm of the good ship England, long after the World Cup has passed by. There has been a lot of speculation that the Italian would step aside at the culmination of the 2010 World Cup, but the English FA have come out to categorically deny the rumours. The FA have stated that Capello will be in charge still, at least until the summer of 2012, when his current contract runs out. That will take the master tactician through the 2012 European Championships held in Poland and the Ukraine.

All of this speculation has come about because of the rising success of Roy Hodgson at Fulham, who has vast experience at international level as well. Hodgson is only on a “rolling contract” which means he could be available if Capello was not going to hang around at the end of the World Cup. None of these rumours have had fuel thrown on the fire by Capello himself, who looks to be very comfortable in his role as England manager. He has certainly enacted a major shake up in both form and status after taking over from Steve McLaren. He is also commanding the respect of the players he is choosing, including David Beckham, who recently spoke of Capello as being intimidating and arrogant, but in good ways which gives him his winning quality.

The England set up are working towards June 11th, when they can sit and watch the opening match of the World Cup. England’s first match of World Cup 2010, is on June 12th against the USA. With only six months to go, there is a lot of final preparatory work to be done. There is opposition to be scouted, and keeping an eye on Algeria will be made easier with them competing in the African Cup of Nations. England have already set up a game against Egypt, and are looking to add Mexico to their list of their warm up games. It is likely that Capello will see his men run out against Japan, just before the start of the tournament.

But now, all eyes will be turned towards Wembley on March 3rd, for England v Egypt. Players still have time to muscle their way into the squad, and there is calls, after Darren Bent’s failure to make an impact, for Fulham’s Bobby Zamora to be given a chance. Zamora (14/1 at Bet365 to make the World Cup Squad) has been a revelation for Roy Hodgson this year, but it will be extremely hard for him to play his way into a role for the World Cup. But nothing is certain, even though Capello will likely know already who he wants to take. But injuries and form come and go, and at least the battle for forward places, should make England all that much better.
