England v Italy Betting Preview – World Cup 2014
This is where it all begins for the Three Lions at Brazil 2014. Can Roy Hodgson’s men make a winning start to Group D? They have consistently been held at underdogs for this one, despite Italy’s struggles to put wins on the board since qualifying for the World Cup. But England’s preparations only saw them post draws against Ecuador and Honduras. Do the Three Lions have enough clinical striking power to see off the Italians in Manaus. They can’t afford to miss chances when it comes to crunch time at Brazil 2014.
This will be just the second time that the two nations have met in a FIFA World Cup. The previous occasion saw them lose out in the match for third place in Italy 1990. The most recent clash between the two European heavyweights, was of course back at Euro 2012, when England played a dour match but managed to hang to a 0-0 draw, only to lose in a penalty shoot out. There have been massive changes in the England squad since then, in what was Roy Hodgson’s first tournament in charge of the Three Lions. Italy lead the overall head to head 9-8 from 24 matches.
Now the England set up is full of youth and enterprise and is that factor which is carrying all the hopes of the nation. England are now on a four match unbeaten streak, but really need to get their forwards, notably Wayne Rooney going. Daniel Sturridge looks the most likely player to be top scorer for England at the 2014 World Cup, but some missed chances against Honduras during their warm up will have cast some doubts over him. They will get punished for missed opportunities in the tournament against good opposition. There is also the problem of England’s back line not looking very solid at all, and the chances of them keeping clean sheets at the World Cup does’t look too high.
From what we have seen of Italy, then punters may well be leaning towards a draw in this one. Until they rounded off with a win over Fluminense in their preparations, Cesare Prandelli’s men went seven matches (D6 L1) without managing to post a victory. The defeat in that sequence of games came against Spain back in a friendly in Match. But Prandelli’s troops shouldn’t be written off, as they have big tournament pedigree and match winners in Andrea Pirlo, Mario Balotelli and Ciro Immobile in their ranks. They have not conceded a goal against England in their last three competitive meetings, and they have the game to open up England. They aren’t a particularly quick side, though and this opener could come down to a battle between the patient position of the Italians against the running, quicker game (and therefore more fragile) of the English.

Italy’s most frequent result in World Cup matches is 1-1 and that Correct Score option looks valuable at odds of 5/1
Would definitely look under 2.5 goals for this one, because on two of England’s last fifteen group stage games have gone over
79% of England’s defeats in World Cup matches have been a single goal, while 81% of their victories have been by a single goal. Italy are going to be tough to break down, particularly if they get in front, and Italy to win by 1 goal is trading at 3/1
