England v Slovenia – International Friendly Update

England defenders John Terry and Wes Brown both sustained knocks in training, which may keep them out of the team which plays Slovenia in a friendly on Saturday. While England boss Fabio Capello trusts that both players will be fit for Wednesday’s crucial match against Croatia, he may take no risk with them on Saturday, especially with other England centre half Rio Ferdinand already missing through injury.

The injury scares have meant that there is a place for Bolton’s Gary Cahill, who has been called up to the squad to provide some cover. If he plays on Saturday it will mark his debut for the national team, having been called up once before but was not used during the qualifying match against Kazakhstan earlier in the year.

A win on Wednesday against the Croats, will guarantee England a place a World Cup 2010 in South Africa. The need for Chelsea’s Terry to be fit for that match is crucial. As the rock in the England defence, the game will be more in jeopardy without the captain organising the troops back there. With such an important game coming up, it is likely that Terry will be on the sidelines for Saturday’s friendly, therefore letting him not only heal, but also to possibly see just what Cahill can do in an England shirt.
