England v Uruguay Betting Preview – World Cup 2014
This is the second chance of survival for both sides as both lost their Group D openers. The pressure is on for both of these now, as defeat will leave their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread. Can Roy Hodgson take the positives from their opening defeat against Italy and put the South Americans to the sword? The England defence may have to be concerned about the potential return of Luis Suarez to the Uruguayan side.
Back at the 1986 World Cup, England lost their first group match, but still went on to qualify. So there is still a window of hope for them. However, there is a big stat working against them in that only four of 46 sides who have lost an opening group match at the World Cup since 1998, have managed to make it through to the knockout stage. So it is going to be time to bust a win for the Three Lions here. But boss Roy Hodgson does have issues to deal with. England don’t look very solid at the back and just where Wayne Rooney fits in the new-look side is becoming a problem.
England are winless in two against Uruguay at the World Cup, but those meetings were a long time ago, back in 1954 and 1966. The last time that they did come together was in 2006 at Anfield, and England won that game 2-1. It is going to be worth looking at Daniel Sturridge at 6/4 in the anytime goalscorer market, as he is favourite ahead of Wayne Rooney at 2/1. England have managed to score in each of their last eight World Cup matches against South American sides. So that is a plus. Liverpool’s Sturridge has three in this last four for England, while Rooney is goalless in nine World Cup matches for England.
England recorded their highest ever World Cup pass completion rate (91%) in their opening game against Italy, and the more that they keep the ball away from Uruguay the better. Luis Suarez is already trading as a 6/4 shot in he anytime goalscorer market upon his expected return. Edinson Cavani, who didn’t offer much in their opener against Costa Rica is 9/4. In suffering a shock 3-1 defeat against group outsiders Costa Rica, Uruguay continued their streak of not winning an opening group match since 1970, and good news for England is that they have only managed one win in their second games in their last six World Cup appearances. England don’t have to be that afraid, because they made Costa Rica look good. Uruguay have now picked up a red card in two of their last four games at the World Cup.
