England Women look to make history with World Cup final berth

World Cup Qualification Previews & Predictions

England Women have already written themselves into the history books. Prior to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup never before had England made it past the quarter-final of the tournament. Indeed, they had never won a knockout match in the World Cup before. That all changed when Lucy Bronze delivered a cracking winning goal for them against Norway in the round of sixteen. It was a strike that epitomised England’s campaign, full of accuracy, power and belief.

After a 2-1 win over host nation Canada in the quarter-finals, in which England had to deal with a huge crowd baying for a Canadian victory they move on to play their biggest game so far, a semi-final against reigning world champions Japan. Even though England Women may well have benefitted from landing in the easiest side of the draw, games still have to be won and finding a way to beat the current holders and then toppling either Germany or the USA (the two top-ranked sides in the world in the final) shows how tough things still are for Mark Sampson’s side.

As in most of the matches at the Women’s World Cup so far (v France, v Norway and v Canada) the Lionesses go into the game against Japan Women as underdogs. But that hasn’t stopped them so far. All four of England’s wins at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup have come by a 2-1 scoreline and punters can back and England Women 2-1 Correct Score at online betting site Bet365 for a price of 14/1.

England Women v Japan Women’s World Cup 2015 betting odds

England Women 10/3, Draw 11/5, Japan Women 10/11

England Women have shown a well-rounded side to their game. They had the ability to fight back for a win after falling behind against Norway and then mental toughness to hold on after going 2-0 up early on against Canada. Underdogs they may be to win the World Cup (8/1 outsiders) but they aren’t without hope. England was the last nation to beat Japan in a World Cup match.

That victory for the Lionesses came four years ago during the group stage, and it was a win made even more impressive as Japan went on to beat both Germany and the USA on the way to lifting the title. The two reconnected a couple of years ago for a friendly, a game which ended in a tie. The biggest concern for England is the fact that they haven’t kept a clean sheet at the World Cup 2015 yet, whereas Japan have taken three of them.

England just shades things in the amount of goals scored and Japan, the only side to have won all their games in the tournament so far, have recorded each victory by a single goal margin only. So expect this one to be a tight affair, but England Women have shown great tactical nous, great spirit and while Japan are an excellent footballing side, there shouldn’t be anything for the Lionesses to fear.
