With domestic and European football pushing the international scene to the backburner ahead of October’s final rounds of qualifying matches, there is no shortage of activity at the bookies. If you fancy a long term wager, banking on England’s success, or lack thereof at the 2010 World Cup, then this is a good time to browse around and pick up some England Specials.

Skybet are currently offer 33/1 on England and Spurs striker Jermain Defoe to finish as top scorer in the tournament. Clearly a long shot, and who knows how much a chance he will get in the games? Long way to go of course, and he will need to keep up his form. The odds kind of say it all on this one.

More interesting is the market for England’s Stage of Elimination from the tournament. Clearly we don’t know the calibre of opponents they will be up against in the Group Stages yet, or how the draw will likely favour them. But should they be too worried about the opposition? If Capello is the right man, and can continue to bring success to the England team, perhaps the rest of the world should be worried about England, than for the likes of Captain John Terry worrying who might be their embarrassing banana skin. There are some interesting odds floating around this market. You would hope that England are at least good enough for Quarter final place, beyond that, it will become a bit of a minefield.

If there is one area of concern still about England’s ability to really challenge for the World Cup, then it is in the area of goalkeeping. The harder Captain John Terry and his defensive corps have to work, the more efficient they are, the better you feel England are going to be. The list of goalkeepers which are England’s front runners for the number one spot, won’t instil the same amount of confidence that Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti does every week, by pencilling in Petr Cech. Will Capello go for the unsteady experience of James, the inconsistency of Ben Foster, or settle for a happy medium of Robert Green?

Stepping away from the football side, nearly as important as Capello’s decision as to who to play up front with Rooney, is the quality of the England football song for the tournament. A good lung-busting tune ringing around the terraces can help give the England lads an extra ounce of energy during a tiring match. No doubt cries of “Three Lions” will be reverberating at every chance, but who is the likely start to record the World Cup 2010 Official England song?
