Ivory Coast boss Sven Goran Eriksson has admitted that any success that the Ivory Coast, who is regarded as the strongest of the African teams participating in the World Cup, is adamant that any success that the Elephants have, will be largely down to his players. Coming in as new boss for the World Cup, Eriksson will know that it will hard to implement his own ideas on the team, with such limited time ahead of the World Cup. One of the main criticisms about the Ivory Coast, is that they look a good team on paper, but not on the pitch. The Elephants just have not been able to pull all of their individual skill together to make a strong team, neither on the African continent, nor on the World Stage. This is only the second time that the Ivory Coast has been at the World Cup, missing out on the second round in their first attempt at Germany 2006.

Eriksson has named a provisional Ivory Coast squad which did not have any surprises, which maybe sums up everything about the Swede. As coach of England, he was criticised for not being brave enough to change things when it mattered, such as taking Theo Walcott to the World Cup but not using him when England really needed a spark. Defence and organisation is always on the agenda with Eriksson, but if there is one strength in the Ivory Coast squad, it is arguably their attacking prowess, led by the Barclays Premier League top goal scorer, Didier Drogba. Along with Salomon Kalou, Aruna Dindane and Gervinho, the Ivory Coast do have fire power, but landing in a tough group along, they need more of an all round plan than just attack. World Cup Fixtures see the Elephants go up against Brazil, Portugal and Korea DPR in Group G, and there will be a need to be stable throughout the line up, something which Eriksson was brought in to do.

But Eriksson has to work with the players he has at his disposal, but they are players who perform at some of the highest levels of European leagues. For betting on the Ivory Coast at the World Cup the factor of having such a new coach, would maybe detract money being laid down on them. But as proven before, it could give them an inspired edge with the old backroom staff gone, and a breath of fresh air rippling through the ranks. It could give them an edge by giving the opponents a element of the unknown. Eriksson may have a bigger job on his hand in uniting the team, but his international results in getting through qualifying campaigns and tournament group stages is there to be studied, largely with praise. Will his pragmatism in approach to his methodical tactical approach pay dividends for the Ivory Coast in their tough group? Eriksson needs to field a team, and there is not much time for him to put it together before the Ivory Coast open their account against Portugal. Eriksson has just two international friendly matches ahead of the World Cup, against Paraguay and Japan.
