At times it has been obvious that the Chelsea midfield has been missing Michael Essien, as the London club push towards the Premier League title. Chelsea have not had the services of Essien for some time, as the midfielder was recovering from injury, only to further damage his knee while training at the African Cup of Nations with his country, Ghana. Now the influential midfielder, regarded as one of the best in the Premier League, has fears over whether he will be fully recovered in time to take his 2010 FIFA World Cup place. One of the strong World Cup Betting Tips as a dark horse threat, Ghana should be one of the strongest African nations taking part. Essien knows that his season for Chelsea is over, but as he watches from the sidelines at Stamford Bridge, he knows that the chances of playing on the biggest stage of all in South Africa this summer is in jeopardy.

The midfielder was expected to get some action in Chelsea’s recent home match against Stoke, which the Blues won 7-0. But complications in his rehabilitation ruled him out, and now Ghana are likely to have to enter their World Cup challenge without their captain. Unlike the walking wounded of Spain, Essien is not so hopeful of travelling to South Africa, and may have to support his countrymen from the comfort of his sofa. Essien is important to Ghana and World Cup 2010 Betting Odds on them, and his influence will leave a big hole in the middle of the team, although the younger understudies which performed at the African Cup of Nations, due to a plethora of first choice injuries, reached the final of the competition.

It is a matter of wait and see for the Chelsea midfielder, and this latest setback will make it hard for him to take his place. But all is not lost for Essien, and while he would rather travel to the World Cup with 100% fitness, there is still time for rehabilitation, as he sits out the rest of his domestic season. Ghana have a good chance of getting out of the group stage, as they are housed in Group D along with Germany, Australia and Serbia. Betting on Ghana at the World Cup, has them around second favourites to qualify from the group behind the Germans. Ghana start their 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign against Serbia on June 13th.
