Spain, the reigning World Champions have announced their provisional 30 man World Cup squad. Vicente Del Bosque will then trim the crop down 25 on May 25th, before making a final decision on the final 23 on June 2nd. Surprisingly, Chelsea’s Fernando Torres made the 30 man squad, despite only scoring 5 Premier League goals all season and only making sixteen starts. It perhaps says a lot about their lack of genuine striking power.

Atletico Madrid’s goal machine Diego Costa is in the mix as well, his prolific form in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League will likely get him on the plane to Brazil, especially as Spain lack genuine number nine options. But in Costa, despite being inexperienced on the international level, they could have found the big piece of their title defence puzzle.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are contributing 11 players combined to the international squad, while eight Premier League players (including Torres) made the 30 man squad, including Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta, Man City’s David Silva, Alvaro Negredo and Jesus Navas, Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla and Manchester United’s Juan Mata and David de Gea. Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado misses out, so does Real Madrid playmaker Isco. Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara has been ruled out with a knee injury.

Spain were drawn in Group B alongside the Netherlands, Chile and Australia. Del Bosque’s men start their defence in a big European clash against Holland on June 13th. In a repeat of the 2010 World Cup Final, Spain are 21/20 to beat the Netherlands (16/5). Spain are 4/5 shots to win the group, which is going to be important, because the runner up in Group B is most likely going to have to face hosts Brazil in the first knockout stage.

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Napoli), David De Gea (Manchester United).

Defenders: Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos (both Real Madrid), Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba (both Barcelona), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Juanfran (Atlético Madrid), Javi Martinez (Bayern Munich), Raul Albiol (Napoli), Alberto Moreno (Sevilla).

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas (all Barcelona), Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Ander Iturraspe (Athletic Bilbao), David Silva (Manchester City), Santi Cazorla (Arsenal), Koke (Atlético Madrid), Juan Mata (Manchester United), Jesus Navas (Manchester City).

Forwards: Diego Costa, David Villa (both Atletico Madrid), Alvaro Negredo (Manchester City), Pedro Rodriguez (Barcelona), Fernando Llorente (Juventus), Fernando Torres (Chelsea).
