The Player of the Tournament market at the World Cup 2014 is a market which will probably pass a lot of punters by, simply because of the bigger attention going towards the Golden Boot (top scorer) market. The Golden Ball odds World Cup 2014 focuses on who the best player of the whole tournament is going to be.

Usually you are going to be eyeing up a player from one of the front runners in the tournament. Why? Because the more games that a player gets under their belt in the competition, then the more chance that they are going to have to shine by influencing what happens on the pitch. The second thing to lean towards would be an attack minded player, a forward or a creative attacking, goalscoring midfielder.

The only one player of the last eleven World Cups to win the Golden Ball who was not a forward player, was Germany keeper Oliver Kahn at Korea/Japan 2002. So it says a lot about the shortlist coming down to somewho who has influenced the tournament from an attacking perspective. The FIFA Award of the Golden Ball is followed by the Silver Ball and the Bronze Ball, for the second and third best players of the tournament respectively.

So with those things in mind, who is the market leader in World Cup 2014 Golden Boot odds? That would be Brazilian golden boy Neymar. The young Barcelona striker is the focal point of his country’s attack and he proved his value at the 2013 Confederations Cup in top scoring and producing some fantastic attacking performances. His domestic form at Barcelona in front of goal wasn’t explosive in his first season in Europe though, but with 30 international goals in just 47 appearances for his country, if he fills his boots at Brazil 2014 with goals, then he’ll get close to the Golden Ball title too. Neymar is 8/1 favourite at Bet Victor for the honour.

Argentina’s Lionel Messi is 9/1 second favourite behind Neymar, and many are expecting this to be his time to shine on the World Stage. It really hasn’t happened so far in his international career, but with Argentina looking so strong to mount a World Cup title challenge this year, and Messi being part of an incredible attack alongside Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain with support from Angel di Maria, then he should finally get the time and possession to shine. Coach Alejandro Sabella has Argentine very well organised and using Lionel Messi in his correct role.

The other big star of the world of football is of course Cristiano Ronaldo, and it is telling that these are the three favourites in the Top Goalscorer market. While Argentina and Brazil are expected to be in the semi finals at least, there is less conviction about how far Portugal can go. Of course, Ronaldo is the key to their progress, but he didn’t weigh in heavily during qualifying for the World Cup (but starred in the play offs against Sweden). Will he have as many games as Neymar or Messi to come in and steal the Golden Ball? The 2013 Ballon d’Or winner has the world at his feet, does he have the team to support him though?

Among the other main options are Spain’s master playmaker Andres Iniesta, France’s flying forward Franck Ribery, Argentina’s Sergio Aguero, Belgium’s Eden Hazard, Germany’s Mesut Ozil, Mario Goetze, Thomas Muller and Marco Reus, and Chelsea’ Brazilian midfielder Oscar. One of the stalwarts of world football, Italy’s Andrea Pirlo, one of the top performers at Euro 2012 and entering his swansong World Cup, may also be in the mix in World Cup 2014 Golden Boot odds at 33/1.
