Hiddink to manage Ivory Coast at World Cup?

There are strong rumours that Guus Hiddink may be taking charge of the Ivory Coast at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The Ivorians looked disjointed at the African Cup of Nations, and fired boss Vahid Halilhodzic, and are now searching for the missing piece of the puzzle. Ahead of the African Cup of Nations, the Ivory Coast were favourites to win that, and make the biggest impression of the African Nations at the World Cup. However, they look to be falling short of fulfilling any of that potential, and the Elephants footprints on the world football stage aren’t leaving behind quite as big an impression as they may hope.

Hiddink, who temporarily took charge of Premier League side Chelsea last year, is still under contract with Russia until the end of June. Russia failed to make it the World Cup, but Hiddink’s experience on the international scene with South Korea, Holland and Australia, makes him a popular figure to hire for tournaments. Turkey has secured his services for their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, but there is enough of a break in his window of employment to take on a World Cup 2010 managerial role. Nothing has been decided yet, by nation or manager, but the link with Ivory Coast star player Didier Drogba is there.

The Ivory Coast are in a group along with Brazil, Portugal and North Korea at the World Cup, and so their chances of progressing are seen as slim. Their form has done nothing to suggest that they can challenge for a place to get out of the group, but perhaps the problems aren’t quite as bad as they seem, if the right hand is in place to guide them. The current Ivory Coast side has been together for a long time, but they clearly weren’t playing as a team at the African Cup of Nations. Hiddink, a popular figure, could be the ideal candidate to gel them together, and get the best out of their star quality.
