After naming a 30-man preliminary squad just days ago, Holland coach Bert van Marwijk has already begun the axing procedure by reducing the original 30 down to 27. Otman Bakkal of PSV, Wout Brama of Dutch champions FC Twente and David Mendes da Silva of AZ Alkmaar all receiving their marching orders and stripped of any chance of playing in South Africa.

The remaining 27 Dutch internationals are expected to travel to Austria for a training camp in the forthcoming week, although several of the Bavarians (Bayern Munich) won’t be available due to their Champions League commitments; Arjen Robben and Mark van Bommel, while Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder will also arrive in camp later than most.

Van Marwijk still have a few weeks before he will have to announce a 23-man official squad for the finals in South Africa, but it appears the Dutch coach already has a host of names in mind. It’s just about whittling down the current 27 to 23.

Holland kick-off their South Africa adventure against Denmark on the 14th June, while later on clashes with Japan and Cameroon await them in a Group E they ought to win.
