Holland v Mexico Betting Preview – World Cup 2014

This should be a good open match between these two and Holland, although they are taking favouritism haven’t been backed to an odds-on price. That says quite a bit about how well Mexico have done at the World Cup so far. Holland are in World Cup form though having won nine of their last 10 World Cup matches, their only loss in that run was in the 2010 final against Spain. Only one UEFA nation has ever been knocked out by a CONCACAF nation, and that was Bulgaria eliminated by Mexico back in 1986.

Holland were more impressive going forward than they were expected to be. They had more shots than anyone else on target in Group B, and they will get Robin van Persie back from suspension. The Manchester United man has scored 21 goals in his last 25 matches for Holland now, and Arjen Robben has eight in his last nine. In the anytime goalscorer market, Robben is 2/1 and RVP is even money favourite. Pretty strong options there and Holland have now won their last five matches in a row.

The two have met before at the World Cup, in the 1998 group stage. It was a dramatic finish to the game, as Mexico fought back from 2-0 down with just 15 minutes left to grab a 2-2 draw. Mexico have tumbled out of the competition at this stage in the last five editions. So poor history against them there. They have also lost three and drawn one of their last four matches against Holland, and in each of those they have conceded at least two goals. So it should be worth going over 2.5 goals for this one. To add weight to that, Mexico have scored a goal in each of their last 11 World Cup matches against European sides.

Would look for second half goals to come in the match as well, as they have scored 10 of their last 12 World Cup goals after the break, and Holland have scored eight of their last nine in the second half too. Mexico produced the fewest shots in Group A, and they certainly don’t carry as much forward threat as Holland do, but Oribe Peralta looks to be their best route to goal and is trading at 2/1 in the anytime goalscorer market.
