There were mixed fortunes for the Home Nations in Wednesday’s qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup. From the elation of the English fans to the despair of the Scottish, the night threw up some interesting results around Europe as places for the tournament now come right down to the wire.

England were 5-1 victors over nearest rivals Croatia in Group 6, with goals from Frank Lampard (2), Steven Gerrard (2) and Wayne Rooney. Rooney’s goal came thanks to the Croatian goalkeeper trying to ‘do a Paul Robinson’, but instead of missing the ball completely though, he played a perfect pass to Rooney to bury the fifth goal. That will have worked out nicely if you had selected a bet for Rooney to finish with +9.5 qualifcation goals. England looked fairly comfortable throughout and are looking as if they are growing greatly in stature under the guidance of Fabio Capello. With the win, they sealed their place in South Africa 2010. The race is now on for second place in the group, with third placed Ukraine having Croatia now firmly in their sights. The Russians are two points behind the Croats but have to face England at home. Both Croatia and the Ukraine face easy last games which should both be won easily. Everything will depend on the Ukraine v England fixture.

Northern Ireland suffered a crucial 2-0 defeat at the hands of leaders Slovakia in Group 3. Slovenia’s 3-0 win over Poland saw them leap frog the Irish into second place, having played a game less that Nigel Worthington’s men. The Irish can still qualify from the Group, but the chances of that happening now have seriously lengthened. Northern Ireland have one game left in the Czech Republic and have to hope Slovenia do not pick up another win.

In Group 9, Scotland failed to maintain any hopes of holding onto a place in the World Cup, as they suffered a 1-0 loss to Holland after a late goal by the Dutch. Norway did themselves a great favour by beating Macedonia to hold grab second place behind Holland who were the first qualifiers out of the European zone. There is still the whole process of only the best eight runners up going through, but with the defeat Scotland no longer have that opportunity. Subsequently the pressure will now be on manager George Burley to stay in the job.

Netherlands 8 8 0 0 24
Norway 8 2 4 2 10
Scotland 8

There are no more games to play in Group 9.

The Republic of Ireland had no midweek action, but they did beat World Cup hosts South Africa 1-0 in a friendly. The Irish were hoping that Italy and Bulgaria would get a draw but it was not to be, as the Italians ran out 2-0 winners, which ensures the World Champions have at least have second place booked. They only need one more point to win the group, and their next game is against the Irish. The win did keep Bulgaria off Ireland’s back, and with their final game against Montenegro, they should be good to secure a runners-up spot.

Wales were also in action, and any outside mathematical chance of them reaching the World Cup finals vanished in a haze of a 3-1 defeat by Russia. As Germany had an easy 4-0 win over Azerbaijan, it meant that both they and Russia are still in with a chance of finishing first. The group should be decided in Moscow when the Germans travel there in October.

Group 4 P W D L PTS
