The Italian preparations for their big game in Dublin, were rocked on Friday, with the news that Captain Fabio Cannavaro has failed a drugs test. Both Italy and the one time World Player of Year’s domestic club Juventus, all insist that it is perfectly innocent though, and this issue has arisen simply because there was some mix up with paperwork. This beauruacratic boo-boo has meant that Cannavaro will not be playing on Saturday against the Irish.

This is an incident which goes back to August, when the Juventus player took an injection after being stung by an insect. Supposedly the injection, delivered by the club’s medical team, contained Cortisone, as most anti-inflammatory drugs do, but it is a substance which is outlawed in sport. Cannavaro is said to have needed the injection in a state of emergency, because the sting which he suffered could have proven fatal.

The Italian skipper did put in a request to be exempt from any consqeuences, because of the nature of having received the injection in the middle of a serious health crisis. But there was some paperwork missing from the request which has thrown the whole thing up into the air, and the drug test which he took in the meantime, of course came back positive, casting aspertions upon the defender.

Not even the tight Italian defence could stop this problem from slipping through the net so it seems, and now they will be without the main man for the Dublin game. He is expected to be back in action for Wednesday nights game against Cyprus, which suggests that it is all much-ado about nothing. If that paperwork had been handed in properly, the positive drugs test would not have had the same impact. Juventus are playing ball with the investigation and inisist everything is being dealt with in good faith.
