Ivory Coast v Japan Betting Preview – World Cup 2014

This is Group C action, the group where Colombia and Greece are also vying for qualification spot. Tough group to call and looking at the form of these two nations ahead of Brazil 2014, then it is Japan who should be running into this one as favourites. They are not, but their form has been reflected a little bit in the odds, because the Ivory Coast have failed to move into a position of being odds-on favourites, which suggest that this could be a tricky match for them. It could be a lot closer than it looks and it is tough to pick out a winner here.

The Ivory Coast do look to have the bigger firepower in their ranks and Didier Drogba is trading at 2/1 favourite in the anytime goalscorer market. The Elephants also do have Wilfried Bony and Gervinho in their ranks so they shouldn’t be short of firepower. However, the African nation only managed to post two wins in their last six matches (W2 D3 L1) and a recent loss against Bosnia & Herzegovina won’t have helped them. They followed that up with a narrow 2-1 win over El Salvador in their final warm up match.

But Japan have been tanking along and have been firing up top. They have won their last five matches are unbeaten in their last six. That sequences of games has seen them take a draw against Holland and a victory over Belgium (both away). Wins over New Zealand, Cyprus, Costa Rica and Zambia carried great momentum for the Blue Samurai forward to the World Cup. They have form too against African sides, because they have won both of their previous World Cup matches against African opponents, which includes a 1-0 win over Cameroon at the last World Cup.

Their best options look to be Keisuke Honda and Asian qualifier top scorer Shinji Okazaki, both around 2/1 in the anytime goalscorer market. There have been just three previous meetings between Japan and the Ivory Coast with the Japanese holding a 2-1 advantage there. This is a tough one to call, and a draw may not be out of the picture, but given recent results from both it is probably one of the group games which are going to be worth looking over 2.5 goals in, because five of Japan’s last five games have gone over and four of the Ivory Coast’s last five have too. Neither are particularly strong at the back and chances could flow.
