| Rummenigge was not used in the first match against Poland. The German coach brought in Rummenigge in the next game against Mexico and the young attacker became a relevation, scoring two goals as he earned international acclaim. Rummenigge would later establish himself in a forward line that includes Fischer and Dieter Muller. However, West Germany was still struggling to find their best World Cup form in the post-Beckenbauer era. TEAM LEADER
Rummenigge was now the key player and captain of West Germany. |
Four years later, Rummenigge had become one of the world's greatest soccer stars, having won the European Cup with in 1980 and European Player of the Year award in 1980 and 1981. The German striker scored the lone German goal in the shocking 2-1 defeat to Algeria. In the next match, however, Rummenigge scored his second World Cup hat-trick, this time against Chile. As the tournament progressed, however, Rummenigge became more and more affected by the knee injuries he suffered earlier.

RAZOR SHARP
Rummenigge was a sharp attacker with goal-scoring abilities. |
In the quarter-final game, West Germany was trailing France by 3-1 in injury time and the German coach Derwall decided to bring on Rummenigge, his trump card. Rummenigge turned the match around with one of the match-tying goals. He later scored one of the penalties that defeated France in the shoot-out. In the final against Italy, Derwall used the half-fit Rummenigge from the start. But Rummenigge could not turn on the magic again as West Germany suffered a 3-1 defeat.

THREATING
Rummenigge (on ground) slided in the first German goal against Argentina in the 1986 Final |
Four years later, Rummenigge was again troubled by his injuries. In the final against Argentina, the South American was leading 2-0. Rummenigge then came on as a substitute mid-way in the second half and again threatened to turn the game around, scoring the a goal before Voeller's equaliser. However, Maradona's through pass allowed Burruchaga to score the winning goal and thus concluded Rummenigge's third and last World Cup tournament.
