We will be the first to express our honesty by saying we don’t know a lot about the Slovakia national set up, and that we are somewhat in the dark into how the Slovak’s will fare in South Africa. They are, however, here on merit after finishing top of Group 3 in the European sector of qualification above the likes of Slovenia, Poland and the Czech Republic. We’ve looked through the Slovakia squad and can honestly say only a few stand out. However, there is one player we’ve heard an awful lot about, a player with genuine talent and the potential to be great so we hear, and that’s Napoli play-maker Marek Hamsik.

If truth be told, we haven’t seen a great deal from the Slovakian wonder-kid but we’ve been impressed when we have had the pleasure. He plies his trade in the Italian Serie A, the top-flight in Italian football, with Napoli. They’re a team which like to attack as they have several quality individuals up front, with Hamsik amongst them. He isn’t a forward however, more of a play-maker, who works in behind a promising Lavezzi for Napoli. He weaves in and out of defences, dodging tackles before having a pop at goal or sliding a through ball through to whoever has dared stride forward. He isn’t exactly a regular scorer but has finished the last two Serie A seasons as Napoli’s highest goalscorer and is set to complete a hat-trick at the end of the 2009-2010 campaign.

Hamsik plays in a similar role to that of Steven Gerrard, occupying a position just off the striker, looking to either have a pop at goal himself of be the supplier. Whichever it may be, Marek is happy to serve as either. However, we’ve heard he tends to play more as a left-midfielder for his country, which is a big negative in our eyes as he’s been very effective for his club in that central role and will cause more of a threat in his favoured position.

Despite being just 22 years-old, Marek Hamsik has already been capped on no less than 30 occasions and has scored 8 times for his country. He’s a player with plenty of promise and one many back in Italy expect to reach great heights with time and experience. He’s been fortunate enough to be part of a successful Slovakia team during qualification and he will hopefully appreciate the valuable experience of a World Cup. He won’t head to South Africa to lap up the stunning surrounding’s and unique atmosphere however. Hamsik, considering Napoli aren’t one of the big-hitters in Italy, will want to show the rest of Europe what he’s really about, and perhaps put himself on the market for the right amount. There’s no bigger stage for Hamsik to make a serious name for himself than in a major international competition, but South Africa really will test his mettle.
