Gerado Martino, the Paraguay coach, announced his preliminary squad ahead of the World Cup in South Africa. The size of the squad was 30 and that will be reduced to just 23 before Paraguay head out to South Africa in a few weeks time.

The surprise inclusion was newly nationalised Argentine Lucas Barrios of Borussia Dortmund, who has 18 goals to his name in the German Bundesliga this season. It was somewhat understandable that Martino was attracted to Barrios but there was no Salvador Cabanas in the 30-man strong Paraguay squad, with Cabanas reportedly ’95 percent recovered’ from his head wound after he was shot in the head in Mexico in January.

From an English point of view; Paulo da Silva (Sunderland) and Roque Santa Cruz (Manchester City) should ring a few bells while Nelson Valdez (Borussia Dortmund) and Oscar Carozo (Benfica) may also be familiar with English punters who keep a keen eye on the European leagues.

30-Man Paraguay Squad:

Goalkeepers: Justo Villar, Aldo Bobadilla, Diego Barreto

Defenders: Claudio Morel Rodriguez, Denis Caniza, Paulo da Silva, Dario Veron, Julio Cesar Caceres , Julio Manzur, Carlos Bonet, Aureliano Torres, Marcos Caceres, Antolin Alcaraz

Midfielders: Edgar Barreto, Cristian Riveros, Osvaldo Martinez, Victor Caceres, Enrique Vera , Jonathan Santana, Sergio Aquino, Eduardo Ledesma, Nestor Ortigoza, Marcelo Estigarribia
