Marwijk names 30 players in Holland provisional squad – No Nistlerooy

Bert Van Marwijk named 30 players in his provisional squad earlier today, with the headline being the absence of one Ruud Van Nistlerooy. The veteran striker, who has scored 33 times for his country and has 64 international caps to his name, was deemed surplus to requirements as Van Marwijk seemingly retains his faith in AC Milan flop, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Reports claimed Van Nistlerooy was very much interested in making a return to the Holland scene, even making a January switch to Hamburg in Germany in a bid to end the season with some eye-catching form. Despite enjoying a decent end to the season with his new club, Van Marwijk claimed he had little confidence in Nistlerooy regaining the levels of fitness and sharpness he once had during his peak.

So, with Van Nistlerooy’s Holland career seemingly over, the pressure will now be on the underachieving Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to perform in South Africa, backing up Van Marwijk’s decisions to exclude the experienced Van Nistlerooy.

The big names were all there however; Wesley Sneijder, Robin Van Persie, Dirk Kuyt, Arjen Robben and Rafael Van der Vaart. In terms of surprise additions, Liverpool’s Ryan Babel, who hasn’t exactly excelled during his time in England, has made his way into Van Marwijk’s provisional squad, although time will tell whether he actually goes to South Africa with the rest of the team. Nigel De Jong (Man City) and John Heitinga (Everton) are the two names we haven’t yet mentioned associated with English football included in the provisional squad.

In terms of some promising players, Hamburg’s Elia is certainly one to watch out for down the wing. In the mould of Babel, Elia has some blistering pace and isn’t afraid to charge forward. Another player which isn’t afraid of getting forward is right full-back Van Der Wiel, who bombs forward whenever possible with the aim of assisting the Dutch wingers. The latter is a promising young player who has only just risen through the Ajax ranks. Ibrahim Afellay, although not exactly young any more, is a player with bags of potential in that role just behind the sole striker, although he may well find life tough getting into the starting eleven considering the wealth of attacking talent Holland have.
