N Ireland v Russia Betting Preview
The lifeline that links Northern Ireland to their Brazil 2014 World Cup dreams is pretty thin. Heading into Friday’s round of qualifiers, the home nation is four points out of second spot, five realistically with an inferior goal difference to that of Israel and Portugal, who are battling for second. While the Irish have shown some good resiliency in only getting beaten once of their opening four fixtures, they really need a precious win to keep their hopes alive. However, against the powerful Russians, that is going to be far from easy.

N Ireland v Russia Recommended Bet:
Head coach Michael O’Neill was disappointed from his last match in charge, a 0-0 draw against Malta. Despite playing some youngsters, there really wasn’t any positives that he could take away from that. Instead of it being a game where the Irish could perhaps find some confidence in front of goal, it was just a frustrating, low key affair where again the Irish couldn’t find their winning touch. That has been a problem for them in Group F already after being held at home to disappointing draws against Azerbaijan and Luxembourg already. There has been good resiliency by Northern Ireland, especially in their huge night in Portugal where they battled to a 1-1 draw. The only loss that Northern Ireland have suffered in the group so far was a 2-0 defeat out in Russia, a game in which they didn’t look overawed, but already being a goal down, a controversial penalty handed a bigger advantage to the Russians on the night. Northern Ireland just have lost their winning touch at the moment, and a lack of goals is hurting them.

Northern Ireland have posted just three goals from their opening four matches. Clearly not anywhere near powerful enough up front. In contrast to that, Russia have scored eight in their opening four and haven’t even conceded a goal yet. It’s hard to see Northern Ireland getting a real foothold in this match. Given Russia are averaging two goals per game so far, it could be sensible in taking a look at a 2-0 Correct Score bet for them on Friday night. The Russians go into the mach five points clear at the top of Group F, and directly beneath them are Israel and Portugal on seven points each. Those two go up against each other on Friday night as well, so a Russian win could see them put further daylight to the rest of the group. They are the stand out side in the group, they have power and technique to call upon. They don’t always hit their top stride, but the quality should be there enough to take a win here. There is a real chance that they will make it five wins from five and should that happen, they’ll have one foot firmly in the door for an automatic place at the next World Cup finals.

Northern Ireland v Russia Head To Head
There have been just one actual meeting between Russia (not the USSR) and Northern Ireland, and that was out in Moscow last year, which ended in a 2-0 win for the hosts.
