The Swiss will have been crushed to have missed out on automatic qualification for Russia next summer. Having won their first nine qualification matches, a defeat against Portugal in the final round of matches saw them pipped to the post by the European Champions. So now they have to steel themselves for an encounter with Northern Ireland. The Irish finished second in their group behind Germany but produced some strong form at Windsor Park in their group stage campaign.

Northern Ireland vs Switzerland Betting Tips

Northern Ireland have two games to go to try and make it through to two successive major tournaments. Their appearance at Euro 2016 was a great step forward for them and after a solid qualification campaign, they could be heading to the World Cup next summer. Standing in their way is a very good Switzerland side though. The Irish produced a W4 L1 record at Windsor Park in their qualifying group, the only defeat coming against Germany in their penultimate game. But they go into this play off scenario on back to back defeats because, after the German defeat, the Irish lost in Norway which was a bigger setback to their form. To be fair, the home defeat by Germany is only their second defeat in their last 15 at Windsor Park in that sequence, they have not faced any side ranked higher than Switzerland currently aside from Germany. The Irish have to have something to play for away in the second leg and under 2.5 goals at bet365 returns a price of 4/9. There is a quote of 4/7 on both teams not to score and Northern Ireland only conceded in one of their five home qualifiers.

In just one of Northern Ireland’s ten qualification matches in the group stage did both teams score in a match. There have only been the four games between these two sides before, two World Cup 1966 qualifiers in which both won their respective home games, before a couple of friendly matches. The first of those was in 1988 which Northern Ireland won 1-0 on home soil and their most recent coming together was a 0-0 draw back in August 2004. Three of the four previous meetings between Northern Ireland and Switzerland have gone under 1.5 goals. The Swiss are the ones who are kicking off as favourites though and a Switzerland to win to nil wager at bet365 returns a price of 11/5. The 0-0 correct score at bet365 is going to be appealing, but again with a nod towards favouritism, there is an appeal on a Switzerland 1-0 victory for 9/2. There’s not likely to be much in this one at all.

Switzerland were one of the form teams through the qualifiers and they will feel a little gutted and hard done by that they didn’t qualify automatically. After winning all nine of their opening fixtures in the qualification process, they suffered an away defeat in their last game in Portugal to cede top spot to the European Champions. The Swiss only needed a draw from that game, but they didn’t perform great on the night. They really failed to show up as a force at the Euros, but have really seems to have opened up into a positive threat at the moment without having given up too much at the both. In just three of their ten qualification matches in the group stage, did both teams score in the match. They only took a clean sheet in two of their three away games, but they aren’t facing a major attacking threat in this one. Haris Seferovic was their top scorer with four goals in the qualification group, despite Switzerland as a whole averaging over two goals per game. Seferovic is the 9/4 bet365 anytime goalscorer favourite) Northern Ireland’s Kyle Lafferty is a 5/2 option.

Switzerland are in a positive frame of mind and there will be a couple of doubts after the Irish have slipped to back to back defeats. That’s some wobbles that they didn’t need going into this one, but their resilience in what is bound to be a game of a certain degree of caution can see them pick up a draw.
