We create a World Cup Golden Boot shortlist for the 2018 tournament in Russia that features players at big prices

Lionel Messi and Neymar are the first two players in the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot betting, although we’re not sure that odds of 9/1 with bet365 for Messi and 10/1 for Neymar (betting odds taken from bet365 on June 9th at 2:17 AM) really represents value.

Messi is a Barcelona goal machine but doesn’t always click in the same way for his country, while Neymar has spent several months injured and might be sharing goals with several Brazil team-mates including Gabriel Jesus.

Jesus is one of a cluster of players priced around the 16/1 mark* (betting odds taken from bet365 on June 9th at 2:17 AM) and that includes Harry Kane although we’re happy to pass over him in addition to Cristiano Ronaldo and the inexperienced Timo Werner.

Minimum of Five Games Needed

It is likely that the Golden Boot winner at the 2018 World Cup will end up playing at least five matches and potentially the full seven that are possible, with three group games being followed by four knockout matches.

James Rodriguez finished top of the pile in 2014 after playing five matches and we’re happy to go with another South American this time around, although he plays for Uruguay rather than Brazil or Argentina.

Cavani appeals for Golden Boot

Step forward EDINSON CAVANI, a striker who ticks a large number of boxes ahead of the tournament in Russia.

Cavani was the top scorer when it came to South American qualifying for the World Cup, notching ten which took him well clear of the pack. The 31-year-old is in peak form after a sensational domestic campaign.

The Uruguayan has been a star turn for Paris Saint-Germain and he will be in a group against Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Russia, with chances sure to come his way against a fairly mediocre trio of opponents.

Having a strike partner like Luis Suarez will be a massive bonus in terms of the space that the speedy Barcelona forward will provide, with odds of 25/1* (betting odds taken from bet365 on June 9th at 2:17 AM) looking fairly massive about the forward.

Lukaku to lap it up for Belgium

It helps to have a Plan B for this sort of market and we’re also plumping for ROMELU LUKAKU at tasty odds of 16/1 odds* (betting odds taken from bet365 on June 9th at 2:17 AM), with the Belgian looking to may hay during the group stage and it looks certain that he’ll have at least four matches in Russia.

Lukaku scored eleven times during World Cup qualifying and will be the focal point of a team who will also include Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne, with manager Roberto Martinez a very attack-minded coach who will set up his teams accordingly.

Belgium meet Panama and Tunisia in their first two Group G matches before a clash with England and those opening pair of opponents couldn’t have been hand-picked any better.

The Panamanians can lay claim to being the worst team in Russia and Lukaku should relish the chance to plunder some goals and force himself to the top of the scoring charts in the process.
