(Full time: 3:1 – goals: Fathy (OG) 47′, Cheryshev 59′, Dzyuba 62′ – Salah (P) 73′)

This is a big game and a host Russia as they could drive towards the round of 16 with a win in this fixture. The host nation opened with a big 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia to give the home support renewed belief that they can string together a positive campaign. Their hands will be tied a little bit more in this fixture as they take on tougher opposition in the form of Egypt. Not only are Egypt better quality than Saudi Arabia, Egypt are desperate for the three points in this fixture.

Russia vs Egypt Preview

So can Russia ease further pressure for themselves by getting three points in this second group stage fixture? It was all too easy for them in their opener as they crushed Saudi Arabia 5-0 and their opponents were just about as poor as you could imagine for World Cup side. So it’s not so much about fantastic performance having been delivered by Russia, you have put into context of just how poor their opponents were. That win for the Russians snapped a seven-match winless streak of form that they were on, and it was their first win of 2018. It was also their first clean sheet in nine fixtures, so from a betting perspective, you cannot put on your rose tinted spectacles and suddenly call Russia a great side. This game will be a bigger test of their ability than that first fixture of the tournament was.

Russia may struggle going forward in this one and for our Russia v Egypt prediction we are going under 2.5 goals at 8/15 odds with bet365* (betting odds taken on June 15, 2018, at 10:15 p.m.). At the very least Russia will want to avoid defeat in this one but three points would take an immense amount of pressure off them ahead of their final group stage match which will be their toughest of all when they take on South Americans Uruguay. Russia’s big goalscoring hope Fedor Smolov is the 5/4 odds favourite* (betting odds taken on June 15, 2018, at 10:15 p.m.) in the bet365 anytime goalscorer market, with Denis Cheryshev the scored a brace against Saudi Arabia at 3/1 odds* (betting odds taken on June 15, 2018, at 10:15 p.m.).

But back to the point by not going carried away about Russia’s win, they are now W1 D3 L4 in their last eight games. Even though this looks as if it will be a tight game this will be a tough test of Russia’s mentality because they will be facing an Egypt side in need maximum points. Interestingly in their win over Saudi Arabia, Russia didn’t even get 40% possession in the game. If they give up that kind of possession to better teams then they are going to get hurt. In the bet365 correct score market the 1-1 draw appeals as a big prediction for Russia v Egypt at 11/2 odds* (betting odds taken on June 15, 2018 at 10:15 p.m.). This is where we will get a real look at Russia.

Can the Pharaohs be positive?

It was a tough blow that Egypt suffered in their opening fixture against Uruguay. It looked as if they had a point until a needless free kick was given away and Uruguay took their chance in the 89th minute to land a 1-0 victory. That will have been a bitter pill to swallow for the Pharaohs because that would have been a fantastic point for them against the group favourites. Now they have to dig deep and pick themselves up and try and find some positive momentum in this game against Russia. They should be able to get Mo Salah, who spent the entire game against Uruguay on the bench, into action as he is reportedly fit. This is where they really need their star player to try and lift and inspire them. A loss here and qualification hopes will have gone.

History still is against them though because Egypt are still on the hunt for their first-ever victory in the World Cup match, and their current form is in great either as they are without a win in their last seven. But their defence and organisation did hold up pretty well against Uruguay, and you have to remember that Uruguay boasts a very strong attack. Therefore our prediction is that Egypt’s could well stick around and get a point. The draw in the match outright is at 11/5 odds* (betting odds taken on June 15, 2018 at 10:15 p.m.). A point is unlikely to be enough for Egypt though considering the big goal difference that Russia have already produced. They have to be positive they have to take the game to Russia to keep the qualification hopes alive.

Russia v Egypt Predictions

While three points would be a massive boost for Russia in moving ahead to the knockout phase of their home tournament, we can see them being stifled by Egypt. The Pharaohs did well defensively against Uruguay and Russia are not as good going forward as the South Americans are. This is probably where it is worth risking Mo Salah and his participation could lift the Africans but still, we see the game ending in a draw.
