Paraguay positives and solid odds in World Cup Betting

Paraguay’s second fixture takes on a great importance in Group E than one would have first imagined. Paraguay stunned the defending World Champions Italy, as they held the European side to a 1-1 draw in their opening fixture. It was Paraguay who drew first blood, and the Italians, who were lacking any kind of creative punch, were saved from a goalkeeping howler. They will next take on a Slovakian side who were shocked in extra time of their opening match when the minnows of Group E sneaked an equaliser. This was expected to be the race for second place in the group behind Italy, but after the determination with which Paraguay played in the first match, they will now be fancying their chances of topping the group, and why not. They have gotten their toughest group match out of the way, and got a point out of that, and now, if the strong South Americans can topple both Slovakia and New Zealand in their remaining games, they will be pushing for top spot. Paraguay really created all of the best chances in the Italy game, and showed why they had impressed so much through South American qualification, finishing third in the race. They limited Italy to barely any chances at all, and if their keeper had been more assured of himself, and not had a rush of blood to the head, then they could easily, and some would say deservedly, have come away with three points. Paraguay are a talented side who know how to defend, but they have that edge of South American flair which they can turn on when it matters most. They can keep the ball comfortably, and pass it around, but are generally looking to push forward when they can. It is their positive, controlled approach which pretty much negated any threat from the Italians, and hinted why Paraguay have been called dark horses. Striker Roque Santa Cruz may get the nod to start after being left out of the opening match, suggesting that he had been carrying a bit of an injury that had been hampering. Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino did throw him on towards the end of the Italy match, but selection may be tougher than that. Paraguay have great options up front with Oscar Cardozo, Lucas Barrios and Nelson Valdez all major threats in front of goal. But it was defender Antolin Alcaraz who stole the glory after Paraguay ahead against the defending World Champions, with a lucky break off a free kick. But now Paraguay really have a chance to grow, and will have seen how Slovakia failed to press home any advantage against the White Caps, and will therefore expect to overpower the small European nation when they go head to head on Sunday.

Paraguay World Cup Betting: They are a team to watch out for. They may have been a little on the defensive mind in the first match, but that is understandable, given the fact that first game jitters, pressure not to lose, and going up against the World Champions will all have played its part. They are comfortable on the ball and can knock it around with ease. As shown in South America qualification, where they stormed out to an early lead, they have a good all round team, with a fine balance, and will start as favourites against the Slovakians, who must be hurting after their last minute disappointment. Would not have much of a problem backing them for the win, they realistically have a lot more at stake than Slovakia.

Slovakia focusing on positives after last minute heartbreak

Slovakia were undone at the last minute, when New Zealand stole a late equaliser in their opening fixture. But, truth be told, the European nation should have been clear ahead of the Oceania side, long before the game reached that place. They had their chances, as Slovakia dominated the game in terms of possession and shots, but just could not grab that vital second goal. Through their European qualification process, in which they won their group ahead of Slovenia, Slovakia showed glimpses of lack of concentration when getting themselves in front. During their build up to the tournament, they lost some close came against Chile and Norway, as they could not finish their chances, and were ultimately punished in the end. The Slovakians are not a bad side, but not heavy scorers, and that will give the advantage to their opponents on Sunday. But if they can keep the ball away from the Paraguayans, then they can play a patient game and build their attacks. They will also take heart from Paraguay’s goal keeping error, and from the fact that the type of balls which New Zealand played against them, ie long ones from the back, probably won’t come into play when facing the passing ability of Paraguay. That could work more in Slovakia’s favour, as the second round of group matches see teams start to open up. Slovakia will start as slight underdogs in this one, as this is their debut in the World Cup, and will probably be lacking just a bit of confidence after the late show from the Kiwis.

Slovakia World Cup Betting: There were positives for Slovakia to take from their opening match, but they could find Paraguay just a little hot to handle. They will need a patient game against the South Americans, and could well be on the back foot for most of the game. But, if they can keep their defence as tight as it can be, and, more importantly, concentrate for 90 minutes, then they could be good value for a draw. With that in mind, simply look for an Asian Handicap which gives them a slight plus, say around -0.50 and there should be good value, or back them outright for a draw.

Slovakia v Paraguay Betting Odds

Slovakia to win: 3/1 at SkyBet
Draw: 12/5 at Boylesports
Paraguay to win: 11/10 at Bet365

Asian Handicap Betting Tip: Paraguay would be likeliest winners out of this contest, and therefore, however much faith you have in them, you should either look to a Slovakia plus, or a slight negative on Paraguay. World Cup betting has this pretty close and not too much to choose between the two teams, and with the upsets around at the moment, who knows. Paraguay are the safer bet though.
