Already Qualified: Brazil, Paraguay

Both the Brazilians and Paraguay have booked their accommodation in South Africa earlier then most as they cruised to qualification, with Brazil qualifying with three games to spare and Paraguay having two qualifiers left to experiment ahead of the summer finals next year.

Still in contention: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay, Venezuela

All the talk is about Diego Maradona's Argentina but the main focus for some will be on as Chile, as a win for the Chileans would be enough to secure their place in South Africa, leaving the remaining five nations still in contention fighting it out for the one remaining automatic qualifying spot.

Argentina have made heavy work of what should have been a routine qualifying campaign. However, under the new management of former great; Diego Maradona, the 'Argies' have struggled, badly. The humiliating defeat at home to Brazil (1-3), in combination with the 1-0 loss away in Paraguay, means Argentina have relinquished control of fourth spot, handing the initiative to Ecuador who now have a one point cushion over Maradona's side of underachievers.

Argentina simply have to win their remaining two qualifiers (Home to Peru on Saturday, Away at Uruguay on Wednesday) to stand any chance of reaching the finals as there are too many countries pursuing that solitary automatic qualifying position.

By 'Solitary' we pretty much have come to the conclusion that Chile will wrap up qualification and secure one of the two official remaining automatic positions. The Chileans only need one more victory to finalise a place in South Africa, with qualifiers away in Colombia (Saturday 10th October) & on home soil against Ecuador (Wednesday 14th October). However, the trip to Colombia looks particularly tricky, although, two draws would pretty much do it for them and it's hard to envisage them losing both their remaining two qualifiers.

Many are forgetting, and quite simply disregarding, that several of the so called 'smaller' footballing nations in South America could still sneak a fourth place finish. Both Uruguay & Venezuela have notched up 21 points in qualifying, just one point behind Argentina in fifth, just two points adrift of Ecuador in fourth, so the pair still have all the incentives needed to make their remaining qualifiers tasty propositions.

Colombia also have an outside chance of swiping the rug from under the noses of those above them, with the Colombians currently on 20 points, three points behind fourth placed Ecuador. However, they would need several results to not only go there way on Saturday, but also on Wednesday. It's unlikely that they will qualify but they will try nonetheless, especially as fifth position does bear fruit in the form of a play-off encounter with a nation from the CONCACAF qualifying zone.

Out-of-the-running: Bolivia, Peru

These two haven't enjoyed the best of times in qualifying, although they have been a nuisance to some and could still be a big thorn in ones side as the pairs results over the forthcoming week will have an affect and say on who actually makes the cut. Bolivia have 'nothing' qualifiers as such left to play, with Brazil and Peru awaiting them, whereas Peru could break some hearts with Peru facing Argentina on Saturday.
