The chance of Northern Ireland getting to their first World Cup since 1986 seriously diminished with a home loss against Switzerland in the first leg of their play off on Thursday night. They had to put in a big defensive shift at Windsor Park against a very good Switzerland side and that should mean that they will have a tough time clawing their way back into this tie out in Basel on Sunday. Switzerland were head and shoulders the better of the two sides and with Northern Ireland having to come out and look for a goal in the match, it opens them up to getting picked off.

Switzerland vs Northern Ireland Betting Tips

It was a heartbreaking and cruel night for Northern Ireland at Windsor Park on Thursday in the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play off against the Swiss. Michael O’Neill’s men find themselves 1-0 down thanks to a penalty that was a pretty shocking decision. But the defeat is in the bag and the Irish have to find a way to respond to that. They can’t totally blame everything on the penalty because they never actually looked like winning this game and they really needed something to take to Basel with them.

The Irish barely got a kick of the ball in the match and were second best in every department. It leaves them with needing a 2-0 minimum victory away from home on Sunday to reach the World Cup. That’s not going to be an easy achievement for them. The defeat by the Swiss was their third straight defeat, having already lost against Germany and Norway at the end of the group stage of qualifying. So that’s a worrying trend of them and this actually is the first time since 2012 that they have lost three matches in a row.

Their failure to net at Windsor Park suggests that there will be value in Switzerland to win to nil at William Hill for the second leg. Northern Ireland’s away form isn’t there as they are W2 D1 L4 in their last seven away from Windsor Park, the wins coming against San Marino and Azerbaijan. Northern Ireland only managed 35% possession in the first leg and didn’t get a shot on target the whole night. That was the first time that they had failed to get a shot on target in a game since a fixture against Poland at Euro 2016.

Switzerland were one of the best teams in the group stage of qualifying, winning nine of their ten games. They have won ten of their last eleven overall, the only blip being a loss against Portugal in the final round of qualifiers which is the reason why they are going through this play off. Switzerland are very strong at home as well at St Jakob’s Park, having lost only one of their last seventeen games there (which was against England). That’s a run which stretches all the way back to 2001.

It’s pretty hard to argue that Switzerland weren’t the better of the two side by a country mile on the night and had the Irish pegged back and under severe pressure. Even if this tie was at 0-0 with that controversial penalty never having been awarded, the Swiss would look a banker to go and win at home. They are value at William Hill to book themselves progress through a 2-0 correct score.
