Honduras Team Profile

The Hondurans, in just their third ever World Cup, will have been pleased with their group in that it’s competitive enough that they could maybe spring a surprise as they go up against Switzerland, Ecuador and France. Los Catrachos didn’t however, exactly set qualification alight in the CONCACAF zone, finishing third and joining Costa Rica and the United States at the 2014 World Cup in automatic qualification.

They haven’t managed to get anywhere in their last two appearances, falling at the Group Stage both times. Even with one of the more comfortable draws that they could have gotten for the group stage of Brazil 2014, they are still outsiders and they will kick of the summer tournament as one of the rank outsiders for the whole thing. Trading at a price of 2,000/1 followers won’t exactly be expecting too much from them. They did get to the semi finals of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, so perhaps that will be their biggest inspiration to push forward, as well as finishing second in the 2013 Copa Centroamericana. The degrees of challenges that they will face at the World Cup finals are a big step up to what they are used to though.

Nickname: Los Catrachos

Honduras Key Players

The majority of the Honduras team aren’t household names, while those of you who follow the main band of European league might recognise a few. The stand outs, though, start with their defensive stalwart Maynor Figueroa who plays in the English Premier League with Hull. He has the experience to be the rock at the back for them, and they will need his vast experience back there to hold them together.

In the midfield area, making them tick over is going to be Oscar Garcia who plays for the Houston Dynamo in the MLS. He is heading towards 100 caps for his country and is an important figure in the centre of the park, just trying to get them to tick over. The whole Honduran squad is a little on the young side and the senior players like Garcia have a huge responsibility on their shoulders.

Honduras do have a goal-getter in their ranks, and that is New England Revolution’s Jerry Bengtson. He has struck 19 goals in 41 appearances for his country and they will need him sharp as he is their main outlet for goals. The support up top should come from veteran Jerry Palacios.

Strengths

They have lost their vastly experienced forward duo of Carlos Pavon and David Suazo from four years ago. So the country is in a bit of a transition period because they are a young side. It is that youthful optimism perhaps which is going to be their biggest asset at the World Cup. No-one is representing them to put in world class performances here and in terms of them getting close to the title it is not going to happen, and getting out of their group may be tough enough on its own. They are going to need some major team spirit and resolve if they are to spring a surprise.

Weaknesses

Seeing as we haven’t seen too much of them, the lack of strength within the deeper reaches of the squad would be a concern, while the unfamiliarity of their defence will also spring a few doubts. Considering North American football isn’t the strongest, and Honduras were only third best doesn’t bode at all well. They are young, which works against them and there just looks to be an overall lack of quality and exxperience to stand up on this stage with and impress.

World Cup Potential: 1/5

We’re certain the Hondurans (Not an official nickname, but we’re sure it will catch on soon enough) will be a spirited bunch, and their travelling support of Honduras followers will make for a party atmosphere on the sidelines. Perhaps they could nick a point off either Ecuador and Switzerland at a push, but progression from the group would be a real surprise and an unlikely scenario. Even so, they’ll give their all and could well be a nation the neutrals pledge their vow of support to. After all, everyone loves an underdog.
