Theofanis Gekas – Greece
Full Name: Theofanis Gekas
Date of Birth: 23rd May, 1980
Current Club: Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany)

International Goals: 20
International Accolades: FIFA World Cup qualifying Top Goalscorer
Theofanis Gekas, while he may not have shone during his brief spell in England with Portsmouth, making just one appearance, the 39 year-old has always performed on the international scene. Along the way to qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, what will be only the country’s second appearance in the finals of a World Cup, Gekas was prolific and Greece would have been lost were it not for the 10 goals scored by Gekas in 12 qualifiers.
The Golden Shoe in South Africa will be contested by some big names, the likes of Fernando Torres, David Villa and Wayne Rooney all vying for the award which, in theory, rewards the best striker of the tournament with a shiny new shoe. However, it was Theofanis Gekas of Greece which finished qualifying in the European sector with the most goals, technically the best forward in Europe according to the statistics, finishing one goal in front of Wayne Rooney and Edin Dzeko.
At 30 years-of-age, South Africa probably represents Gekas’ final chance to play in a finals, or at least as a prominent fixture. Because of a fruitful qualifying campaign, Gekas took his tally for Greece up to 20 and is now averaging nearly a goal every-other-game for his country. However, the vast majority of his goals have been scored against some pretty average nations, while strikers against Spain and Italy, both of which occurred in friendlies, remain his only notable goals. Gekas has also never scored a goal in a major international tournament, but after an impressive spell during qualification for South Africa, Gekas will be confident of ending his drought in the summer’s finals.
