Three England Lionesses make World Cup All Stars Squad
Hats off to three of England’s Lionesses who performed so well at the 2015 Women’s World Cup. Keeper Karen Bardsley, along with defenders Steph Houghton and Lucy Bronze have all been picked in the World Cup All Stars squad. All three of the Manchester City players were among the 23 players picked by a FIFA technical study group.
The Lionesses defied all expectations to reach the semi-finals at the summer’s World Cup, which was hosted in Canada. They ended up finishing third after narrowly losing out to Japan in their semi-final contest, but responded brilliantly to beat Germany in the third placed play-off. That was the best finish by an England Women’s team at a World Cup.
England Captain Steph Houghton played every minute of the tournament for her country, while keeper Bardsley would have done as well had she not suffered a swollen eye in their quarter-final win over Canada. It was perhaps Bronze who epitomised the England effort the most. The full-back scored two goals in the tournament (getting shortlisted for the Golden Ball Award) and was tirelessly energetic in England’s run.
