Uruguay V Argentina – Thursday 15th October

(00:00 GMT)

A late Diego Forlan penalty for Uruguay & an even later Martin Palmero strike for Argentina has meant this final qualifier is a must win game for both nations as the winner takes all in terms of automatic qualification to the South African World Cup next summer. Defeat doesn’t bare thinking about as anything other than a victory for either side could not only spell the end of their automatic qualification hopes but they could also miss out on fifth position, the last chance lagoon for some countries still involved.

The situation for both teams is simple, win and qualification for South Africa is assured, lose and face up to the fact that you could lose your grip on even a play-off finish as an Ecuador win elsewhere would ensure that the loser here would end the night empty handed. With all this in mind, both sets of players and the respective managers will set their sides up to win the game, but which nation will prevail and seal that all important last automatic spot?

Well, somewhat surprisingly, Argentina aren’t the favourites to do the business in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, with home advantage for Uruguay one of the main reasons why the bookies seem to think that the travellers won’t have the best of nights. Although, Argentina’s recent below par form would have come into consideration, also, when they weighed up the odds for the two.

Uruguay Home Record: 4-3-1

Uruguay Goal Tally: 28-9

Argentina Away Record: 1-2-5

Argentina Goal Tally: 22-20

It’s clear for all to see that Argentina have a torrid away record in qualifying, winning just one of eight away qualifiers thus far. Colombia, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador & Paraguay, have all beaten Argentina when they’ve travelled, and that doesn’t bode at all well for Diego Maradona’s men as they head over to Uruguay, a side that has lost just once at home in seven home qualifiers, that defeat coming against the zone winners; Brazil, 4-0.

Uruguay have based a successful qualifying campaign on their impressive defensive record. Conceding just nine goals in 18 qualifiers in no mean feat and, with Argentina struggling up top, failing to score in their previous two away qualifiers, the task at hand for Diego Maradona and Argentina looks even more daunting.

Argentina should win with the wide array of talent they have at their disposal but their patchy form would suggest otherwise. Uruguay have the huge positive of this being a home qualifier in the capital, but will they make the most of what should be a buoyed Montevideo support on Thursday?

Our Hunch: It would be typical for the ‘Argies’ under their hero; Diego Maradona, to go through a dreadful qualifying campaign but still make the finals by the skin of their teeth. Heading to Uruguay knowing you have to win isn’t the best scenario but Argentina have the players capable of securing a big result on the road, it’s just a case of whether they will finally deliver for Maradona. They have glorious odds to give their loyal fans a big dose of relief and we feel they will do it… just!
