USA v Portugal Betting Preview – World Cup 2014

The USA could put Portugal in some serious trouble here, as Ronaldo and co were hammered in their opening match by Germany. The USA meanwhile managed to get a win on the board in their opener as they snatched a late winner over Ghana. So there is a lot on the line here, with question marks over Cristiano Ronaldo’s fitness, can the USA double up on their points here and likely put Portugal out of the competition?

There isn’t anything to split these two from their five previous matches played against either. Each have taken two victories and a draw, and both have scored five goals in those game. It is the USA who are running in form against Portugal though, as they have won their last two against the Portuguese. That includes a win at the 2002 World Cup, which was their only previous meeting in the World Cup finals. Incidentally, that 3-2 win for the USA featured two own goals, the only game in World Cup history to have had that happen in.

The USA are running in a nice bit of form too, having won their last four matches on the bounce. Their last three have all ended in a 2-1 victory and you could have a shot at that at 7/1 in the Correct Score market if you fancy that to continue. Both Teams To Score could be a good option as well, because the USA have scored in seven successive matches in the World Cup now, however they have only kept two clean sheets in their last 24 games at the World Cup. After having lost Jozy Altidore with injury, Clint Dempsey is 2/1 shortest priced option in the anytime goalscorer market.

Portugal suffered their biggest ever World Cup defeat in going down 4-0 against Germany. It was the first ever time that they had conceded four goals in the competition, and they were simply torn apart. Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t look in the game or ready to pose any kind of threat and that is a problem for the Portuguese. Ronaldo, who is still 4/6 favourite in the anytime goalscorer market, has actually only scored two goals from 55 shots at the World Cup in his career. The Europeans aren’t in great form, having won just one of their last eight games at the World Cup now, drawing three and losing four. They have to be a little nervous here.
