Van Nistelrooy nearing deadline for Holland World Cup squad

Will Ruud Van Nistelrooy make it the World Cup? The chances are looking slim as Holland boss Bert Van Marwijk has left the veteran striker out of a preliminary training squad. This is not the final selection for the official provisional 30 man World Cup squad, and the coach has cited that there is still a chance that the former Manchester United player could earn himself a place in South Africa. Holland make for great World Cup odds simply because they have a wealth of stars, and came through qualification easily in the European zone. One thing which will cast doubts over them, is that their qualification group was so easy, they have not really been tested against a top team in the world competitively for some time.

After retiring from the International scene following Euro 2008, Van Nistelrooy had a change of heart and made himself available to his nation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. But Bert van Marwijk apparently has other plans, and has snubbed Van Nistelrooy in the informal training camp, which was only attended by 26 players. Things are likely to change though by the time the Netherlands hand in their official 23 man squad for the World Cup, because they have not called any players who are involved in the final of the Champions League to the training camp, with notable Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder and Bayern Munich’s Aarjen Robben prominent among the omissions from the get together. World Cup betting at Bet365 is worth checking out when it comes to Holland, for while they are back in the odds a little bit, they present a good outside opportunity to win the tournament outright.

Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie was named in the training squad, along with Liverpool’s duo of Ryan Babel and Dirk Kuyt. Betting on Holland at the World Cup will see them expectant to win their Group E match ups. They go up against Denmark, Cameroon and Japan in an intriguing group. Ruud Van Nistelrooy has until May 11th to get into the preliminary squad, and the door is not completely closed upon the striker who is plying his trade with Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. Van Marwijk is taking his time over the decision, and there will be another training camp ahead of the May 11th date which will include players who are still involved in important fixtures with their clubs. The coaching staff have been watching him, but the former Real Madrid star looks unlikely to push his way into full contention to make an appearance at the 2010 World Cup. Holland get into warm up action with matches against Mexico, Ghana and Hungary.
